Registered 15 years agoJust a reminder another Shuttle mission scheduled for the 29th of this month.
In the meantime - The Space Shuttle: A Horizon Guide was on BBC 4 last night. Its a compilation of previous Horizon Space Shuttle episodes. Its a bit lightweight but is an easy hour's viewing.
It was Space night on BBc4 they also showed Knocking on Heaven's Door - about the early days of the Russian space program.
Destination Titan - about the space probe sent by a team of British scientists to Titan, Saturn's largest moon, charting the sacrifices they made and their hopes for the landing. -
Is that the last Shuttle mission? -

No, the last one is in June.
Edit: All of the recent one's have been sort of last shuttle missions - Each Shuttle in the fleet is doing its last mission. -
I watched the Titan doc and the shuttle one. Both really good. I didn't know much about the shuttle explosion in the 80s, such a shame for all of them especially that poor teachers family who were watching the launch. Unthinkably horrible. I think that what they have done has been remarkable, especially when you see how much hubble has advanced knowledge in the area. -

The programme last night didn't cover it in detail. There is a hell of a lot more to it than just faulty O-rings (Corporate bullying, whistle blowing, government fudging, and loads more)
Challenger: Countdown to Disaster is a semi-dramatised documentary that was shown a while back on Channel 4, and is well worth watching - If only for Richard Feynman being a pain and stopping the Govt. enquiry becoming a whitewash by pointing out the problems with NASA management. -

Registered 15 years agoTo celebrate the fact that its 50 years to the day since Yuri Gagarin went into space, a film has been released...
"First Orbit is a feature-length, experimental documentary film about Vostok 1, the first manned space flight around the Earth. By matching the orbit of the International Space Station to that of Vostok 1 as closely as possible, in terms of ground path and time of day, documentary filmmaker Christopher Riley and European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli were able to film the view that Yuri Gagarin saw on his pioneering orbital space flight. This new footage was cut together with the original Vostok 1 mission audio recordings sourced from the Russian State Archive."

Registered 12 years agoOn the face of it, First Orbit could have been a really dull film. But for me, knowing that this is what he was seeing in real time makes it quite compelling and beautiful. -
SpaceX throw the door of "low cost" low earth orbit wide open!
SpaceX is my new favourite company! -

It does sound really enthusiastic but IF they can pull off what they say they can then it really would help usher in a new era of space launches.
It's not written by spaceX though, just a space enthusiast.
Wont have to wait long eithier according to the SpaceX web site the test launch of the Falcon Heavy is next year.
They're doing a bunch of launches to the ISS this year too using the Falcon 9 that the heavy is based on. -

From time to time. Its fairly quiet when it is on.
It will get a lot livelier closer to launch. -
