I think it'll earn enough eventually do get a sequel. The fact they're considering doing a sequel to The Last Airbender which was also a disaster, it may eventually happen. Depends on how it does overseas and on BR/DVD. If not then we've still got a brilliant film which will hopefully have a feature packed BR release. In an interview with Alex Garland they asked him what it felt like to have a no. 1 film at the UK BO. He said it didn't mean anything to him as this was no sign that the film would be a success. He also said he could have made it PG-13 but he's not interested in doing that. Good man. |

Two main factors here:
Gutted, looks like Dredd's bombed in the U.S.

There's something wrong with this world.
a) Lionsgate's severe lack of decent promotion
b) It's not being shown in that many American theatres -

Blame Lionsgate for not promoting it. Or Canada. Whichever will do. -

Registered 11 years agoI think I've seen one poster in the whole of NY over the past week or so. But really the film had too much previous baggage for an American audience, I suspect. -

Registered 16 years agoAV club gave it a D+ in their review. I also noticed a fair amount of snobbery in the comments over it being just a British comic (which surprised me) and some trying to claim the Stallone version was a great bad film and therefore a 'remake' wasn't needed. -

I personally think so - cost more and 3D takings on the decline. I personly refuse to see anything in 3D and was generally disappointed with the limited 2D release here.

Registered 11 years agotbh the 3D in it is so good I'm not surprised they didn't bother much with the 2D showings. -

Registered 15 years agoJust saw the 3d version in the US and loved it. In fairness all local cinemas were showing both 2d and 3d versions at reasonable times and saw a few posters about town. Really hope something gives it a second wind a la Taken.
Cast was good. Looked great apart from the bikes and Dredd's portrayal was perfectly faithful.
Cursed earth and Dark Judges deserve a big screen outing.
Fingers crossed. -

Registered 9 years agoI expect that once it's released on BRD then it will turn a tidy profit. It was never going to be a blockbuster, but it has a good chance of being a sleeper hit at retail. -

Registered 9 years agoDREDD 3D is a vile, inhumane, and horrifically violent movie from beginning to end. It has an extremely nihilistic humanist worldview where anything-goes behavior is exercised by both the villains and the hero. DREDD is not only a frontrunner for the worst movie of the year, but easily stands as one of the most repellent films of all time.

Registered 12 years agoIs the comic at all popular in the States? I was actually quite surprised with it being a British creation, what with it being set in America and all.
I liked the movie very much, but I also read the comic prequel to it and thought it was very bad. Is the regular comic any better? -

Registered 12 years agoI saw this four times at the cinema, with four different sets of people, and they all loved it.
One of the most bad-ass films of 2012, and it totally nails the core of what DREDD is all about. I'm amazed it didn't do better at the box office, purely from word of mouth. I heard very little negativity.
DVD and Blu Ray out in a couple of weeks. On the 14th, I think.
Oh, and the soundtrack. That was great! -

Been buying Dredd stuff since seeing it, actually, in the vain hope the money will fund another film. -

Registered 16 years agoNot too surprising but I pre-ordered the Blu-Ray as soon as Amazon emailed they were taking orders, really looking forward to seeing it again.
It's a remote hope but disc sales could help a possible sequel coming to fruition but I'm just glad there's a Dredd movie that does justice to the source material even if it's a one off. -

Registered 12 years agoThe problem is that when a film 'finds its audience' at home, it usually takes it years for it to make decent money.
It would take everyone who has already seen it to buy the movie three times for a sequel to be greenlit. -

Registered 12 years agoI wish it was different too, chrissypoo. The sad fact is, the sly version killed the brand everywhere in the world except the UK.
I would absolutely love a sequel and its a crying shame it wont get one. -
I think it was because sly killed it. Even if you didnt give a shit about dredd, all of the reviews said 'good, bloody action movie' so by the law of averages, the fuckwits who keep shit like the transporter afloat should have given it a go.
I think having Dredd attached to it actively kept them away. Im sure if it had been about a futuristic lawman called Clive, we wouldnt be having this conversation..
