FF7 remake is really good, so much better than 15.

It's doing it a bit of a disservice even comparing FFXV and FFVII. I tried going back to the Royal Edition recently on PS5 and realised I must have been going through a pretty dark time when I played it. There's some good stuff in there but as a package it's total nonsense.

The golden era of Final Fantasies VI to X are some of my favourite games of all time. But then I did play them on the hardware of the time and going back to PS1 era games is not really something Iíd now want to do for long. They were good but very much of their time.

I have no doubt that nostalgia for VII is a big reason for the popularity of the Remake and thatís driven more by the story, characters and music than the actual gameplay.

(The story, characters and music are utterly brilliant, mind.)

So maybe the modern Remake is the best way to experience Final Fantasy VII - but I guess youíre unlikely to experience the same thrill at seeing Aeris and Cloud together again that a veteran of the original would.

Oh, and be warned that this is actually only the first third or so of the original game!
What?!? I didn't know that! I never completed FFVII on the PSOne, but was suddenly interested playing this again, but not if it's not the full game...?
    1) more like first 10% of the game if that
    2) not the same game as ff7 really is it
    3) original ff7 is much better than remake in terms of game play and pacing, remake has better graphics
    4) remake is not a good game at all.

Itís also sitting at high 80ís on aggregate sites with 95% critic recommendations, and 8/10 consumer scores.

Ultimately itís free to try - thereís a demo available on PS4 and in less than 5 days you can get the entire game for free.

If you are a fan of the original I would recommend playing it. At worst you will waste 20-60hrs before giving it up. If veering towards the latter it really wont be that bad will it?

Game of 2020 for me, loved it. It doesnt just have better graphics, it has brilliant characterisation, the music is immense and the world (midgar) building is superbly realised. I would think most would struggle to disagree on those points. I also happened to think the combat was brilliant and really liked the way they handled new and old story elements.

The game was good overall and I really enjoyed revisiting Midgar.

However the story was completely incoherent to newcomers. They just threw Sephiroth at you early on with no buildup and no backstory, yet somehow everyone knew he was the ďbig badĒ.

No real spoilers here......and that ending......Cloud can somehow now swat away buildings that are being thrown at him with his sword, and jump over massive chasims. Wasnít long ago he only just managed to catch himself from a falling bridge.

It all just got really silly and went downhill fast in the last few hours.

That's a fair point. I guess the name made me assume it was the same game as the original albeit with smarter graphics etc.

But if its still an awesome game, then it'll still be one for me to play :)

I'm a big fan of the original AND the remake. They are very different games but FF7R is very enjoyable game in it's own right even if the story was a bit too Advent Children towards the end. I certainly don't regret buying it but, regardless of the title, don't think of it as a remake and you should have a good time with it. It's certainly got the best battle system they've done in ages and soundtrack is pretty amazing.

FFVII Remake is the best game on PS4 for me. Nostalgia is surely a big factor there, but I genuinely love the writing, the combat and the realisation of Midgar in 4K. I don't care that it's only the first third of the original game, I spent a good 70-ish hours on it, and loved every second.

I'd definitely recommend at least checking out the demo, if you're on the fence.

Who's the white haired guy in the new trailer?

He's not from Crisis Core is he? As that was unfathomable wank.

Jesus Christ Square do not throw away all my goodwill earned from the remake.

    Dirge of Cerberus I believe.

He's just a VR boss by the looks of things though, so it's cool.

Polite reminder though, that Roche is still a thing. I know he just like, completely disappeared off the face of the earth in the back half of the game, but yeah.

Tried Maquette this evening. It's ok - I'm glad I didn't pay for it, but I'll see it through to the end. It a bit like The Unfinished Swan meets Superluminal, but not as good as either of them.

Played about an.hour of Remnant yesterday, enjoyed, I'm toss at "Souls" style games but the fact I can join or be joined by other players for entire campaign might help. I do with I could rotate the minimap though. All games should have this option.

One early boss is an absolute bastard, if you can kill him you can finish the game.

Spent about 4 hours with Remnant in 3 player co-op albeit randoms. I think we just kept farming the same area, didn't meet any Bosses. Once again I do not think the "game loop" of this genre is for me. I just find them.boring.
I think me and the game are done, along with LotF, Souls,Borne etc, and that is fine.

I've been playing Borderlands 3 on PS5, which is beautiful and super smooth, but it looks like the minimap updates at 30fps. It's really distracting, I had to turn off map rotation because it's so painful to look at, but now I keep getting lost.

As a Final Fantasy noob (played 11 or 12 (not sure) on PS3 maybe for a hour) I'm thrown for a loop here that in the first 30 minutes I'm fighting a boss in FF7. Ok I know I need to learn a bit but c'mon.

Out of all the bosses in the game, where does this first one rank?

Made a start on Maquette. Seems like a perfect plus game thus far. Clever concept, slightly twee story (but it might well get better), great music.

Also runs at 60 on PS5, which is appreciated.

Maquette was a nice surprise for me. I loved The Witness and platinum that so seeing the art style in this and being a puzzle game made me instantly give it a go. It's pretty short and I competed it in two sittings but I loved it. Not difficult and certainly nowhere near the bastardness of the final puzzle room on Witness but still made me think at times.

    Definitely recommend it.

Iíll throw in my 2 cents just to confuse you some more...

FFVII is an RPG that is about 50 hours long. Midgar is the first city, youíre there for about 3 hours before leaving for the open world. You free roam the whole planet, and there are probably about a dozen or so towns along with various dungeons etc.

Remake is about 30 hours long, and contains that first city of Midgar only. It sticks mostly to the same story beats, but where the first game might have five minutes of story progression then 10 minutes of fighting through a dungeon area then 5 more minutes of progression, the new game contains that same 5 minutes of story then stretches the dungeon out to an hour.

The story bits are largely improved, the graphics are great, the music is great, the voice acting is solid and the translations are vastly superior (the original had some dodgy translation from Japanese in places) - it also diverges from the original in places, to great effect where it fleshes out the city and some of the minor characters more. But also to disastrous effect when it introduces characters who you didnít see until long after Midgar in the original, and it does so in a really clunky way without context that would just be confusing to anyone who hasnít played the original. The ending is also just terrible - they went far away from the original, which makes sense because that game didnít end there, it was really just beginning, but they did so in a way that was just awful.

Ultimately your enjoyment of the remake will come down to how much you can tolerate the combat system because you will be doing it for many many hours, a way larger part of the game than combat was in the original. Itís also a completely different style, the original was basically turn based and you picked moves from a menu and it was very strategic. The new one is an action game and is all about running around and timing dodges which is something that just didnít exist in the original. I didnít enjoy the combat and therefore didnít enjoy the game overall, though there were parts that I loved just for fleshing out some of the minor characters and areas of the original, and realising them in beautiful detail.

Iíd say the original is a masterpiece and should be played. The Remake is more hit and miss, and really benefits from having prior knowledge of the original to give context to some things. So Iíd recommend playing the original first.

    Games for May:
    Wreckfest (PS5)
    Battlefield V (PS4)
    Stranded Deep (PS4)

Good line up IMO - Wreckfest is exactly the game I want on PS+. It's not something I'd necessarily buy, but I'm now quite keen to give it a go.

Really enjoyed Stranded Deep back on release. Bit of a learning curve and it can be quite unforgiving with the settings as they 'should' be at first but I'd urge people to try and persevere. Took me a few full resets to become Tom Hanks but it got pretty satisfying when I did.

Played a couple of hours of Wreckfest this evening. It's better than I was expecting and certainly more fun than Dirt 5.

It's not that sophisticated and the cars lack some weight, but some of the races and tracks are excellent. It's a shame that there are virtually no haptics or even rumble, though.

Tried Wreckfest on the Xbox at 30fps (or less) but couldnít hack it. Here, though, at 60 Iím loving it. Great selection of old Escorts, Datsun, Volvos etc to smash up, fun tracks and pleasing slidey physics. Itís basically the game I played at 8 with my toy cars making tracks in the dirt.
