    BBC Article

For many people, there's nothing new about laughing at Lembit Opik.

This is, after all, the MP who wanted public funds to hunt planet-destroying asteroids. The man whose, shall we say, complicated personal life got him many more headlines than his Commons speeches ever did. The only difference this time was that he actually wanted us to laugh.

Was it really so surprising that the former MP for Montgomeryshire might see a future career in comedy? He seemed to take a cab straight from his election night declaration to the Have I Got News For You studio.

Surely the election was the end of his comedy career?

He was only funny because it was easy to take the piss out of him before. Doubt anyone will cae about his wacky antics now that he's not a member of the Lib Dems.

Why is the public's reaction audio clip on that link just full of Aussies/Kiwis?

He's a good bloke, I wish him well. Not sure how funny he is though.

Sorry I don't understand? I thought his career was already a comedy?

I think he could be quite good in sitcoms, that is if he can act. Stand-up I'm not so sure about.

Has he completely lost the plot? Only going to humiliate himself further.

He was on the Wright Stuff the other day, he did a little bit of standup. Bit odd seeing an ex-MP do that but fuckit, he seems like an alright bloke and he's doing something different. As for running for Mayor, what's wrong with that? He can't possibly be any less suitable than that useless posh journo prick that inexplicably got the job.

Putting forward a comedy candidate worked for the Tories.

Behind Boris' tousle-haired buffoonery is the (second*) smartest brain in the Tory party, afaik. Altho', this being the Tory party we're talking about, this is no real boast.

    * Gove is by all accounts a superbrain. But he's also a weak-chinned public schoolboy arseshaving.
