UK ale is deffo the best imo. I know Belgian beer is highly rated by some, but it tends to have a certain taste that I just can't stand. Went to a beer fest in the Grand Place in Brussels a couple of years ago and had to stick to lager or fruit beer as I could finish a lot of the other stuff. -

Try going into ones that do have character maybe?
- and to the thread
British beer is the best but I had some really nice beers in Cleveland (Ohio) when a local took me to some bars that only stocked micro brewery beer. Changed my mind about the state of beer over there.
No bitters but plenty of choice with dark and light German style beers. -

For shit pubs that may be true. But there are great pubs out there worth seeking out.
It's quite London-centric but Fancyapint.com rates pubs 1-5 and any pub with a 5 pint rating is worth a visit. -

Agreed. Mix in some Strongbow and a splash of blackcurrant cordial and you're in heaven. -

Registered 20 years agoWhat are these top Belgian lagers? I'm only aware of a small family concern over in Leuven who make a couple of beers
On the other hand, many of their ales are unique and very tasty, and probably cover a greater range than any other country.
I'd say Belgium and the UK have many unique brews each. Everywhere else produces too much pale lager to be famous for their beer. -

there are lovely beers all over the island but the standard shitty lager slapped down in your average city centre bar is minging. One nice thing about Germany, beers are almost universally poured with care and in nice glasses.
That's very true. I tend to avoid 'bars' and stick to good old boozers. Decent ale is definitely becoming more popular in the UK - small breweries popping up all the time. -

Just a pity it's so expensive over here. I am glad though that you can even get it, I remember when I first came to the UK you could occasionally find Castle and that was it, now it's easy to find Hunters, Savanah, Windhoek etc. -
Oooh, I do like a pint of Summer Lightning.
Goes down well. They never have it anywhere though.
