Why do you all keep calling Captain Picard Patrick Stewart?

In my case, it's an ironic "I'm a nerd so I think he's Picard in real life" bit.

And I maintain that, even if Stewart picked a public fight for no good reason, and in effect "started" Corden, Corden was the one who seemed to get incredibly aggressive over it, and came off like a bit of a psycho (rather than Stewart, who came off, at worst, like a bit of an arse).

Oh, and another reason I prefer Stewart to Corden is because North > South, in every respect apart from maybe weather (and, er, jobs).

Yes but he is a "comedian" with an image to think about and a supposed "wit" to fall back on. If he can't take a little jibe from an actor and retort with something funny / witty himself without resorting to a "did you spill my pint" eyeballing then he has none of the "talent" you claim he has.

The fact he never did stand-up was as clear as day watching that.

I thought his initial reaction was fine - the "get on with it" or whatever it was. Then PS starts talking bollocks and calling him fat like a right cock.

Didn't James Corden start it by saying something about Patrick Stewart when announcing him onto the stage that was edited out of the video we've watched.

I'd like to know what PR guru Max Clifford thinks about the whole thing.

Corden really should develop a thick skin here.

    Oh.

I have not seen this video, have no idea who Gary or Stacey is and have no idea what this is about.

Has this Gary bloke been chosen as captain of the Starfleet flagship? No: I rest my case.

Edit: Infact, AFAIK, the other bloke hasn't even been to Starfleet Academy, never mind progressed to a senior command post on a starship.

Yea, I want to see if that is true. I don't think Stewart would immediately walk on stage and lay into him if Cordon didn't already say something.

Not read anything about that apart anywhere other than this thread so far. All the reports I've read have been very much on Corden's side as it goes:

As showbiz spats go, it boldly went where none has gone before - Patrick Stewart was left Klinging on to his shattered ego following an intergalactic battle with James Corden.

Forget Star Trek, the veteran thesp proved a star twit at Tuesday night's Glamour Awards in London, after insulting host James - and getting jeered for it.

A celebrity audience including Cheryl Cole, Billie Piper, Pixie Lott, Christine Bleakley, Alexandra Burke, Michael McIntyre, Fearne Cotton and Dizzee Rascal watched open-mouthed as the pair locked horns.

It ended with X-Men star Sir Stewy yelling: "Beam me out of here! Taxi!" Things kicked off when the 69-year-old actor went on to present the Best Actress gong to Avatar star, Zoe Saldana.

Sir Patrick launched into a long, self-congratulatory monologue. Yawn.

Then he turned to the Gavin & Stacey star and double Bafta-winner and, in a patronising tone, said: "I want to speak to James, here. It is James, isn't it? "When the presenters are standing up here, and when the recipients are receiving their awards, don't stand at the back of the stage with your hands in your pockets, looking around as if you would rather be anywhere in the world but here."

Interrupting him to apologise, 31-year-old James then returned to the back, shoved his hands in his pockets, stared at the ceiling and retorted: "And when you come on stage to present an award, you should just f****** get on with it."

Patrick then hit below the belt saying: "From where I was I could see your belly and that was from right at the back of the room." In reply, James said: "Sorry, I'm waiting for the punchline. You could see my belly... I can see you dying right now.'' Cue raucous laughter from the audience.

Undeterred, Patrick referenced a quip James had made earlier about fancying Nick Jonas. He said: "If you fancy one of the Jonas Brothers, cover your belly."

Silence descended at the Berkeley Street marquee in Mayfair. Then James bopped to the front of the stage, lifted his shirt and said with a loud laugh: "I feel bad for people who haven't seen my belly." Touche.

As Sir Patrick eventually left the stage, James got the last word - and the last laugh - saying: "OK, can we get a taxi really quickly, please? "There's an ol' man going home.'' Afterwards, James told us: "I'm hugely disappointed. He tried leaning in to speak to me, but I wasn't interested and couldn't hear what he said.

    "I couldn't care less now. It's just a shame he wasn't what I hoped.

"I didn't want it to ruin the night."

Where is that from? Remember that Picard is a die-hard Yorkshireman, socialist and Labour supporter. Any press with the vaguest of right-wing leanings will probably love an excuse to stick the boot in to a filthy Northern commie regardless of their rank or service record in Starfleet.
  • Deleted user 10 June 2010 15:22:00
It was the first link I came to (Mirror) but there's similar reports on the Beeb and the Telegraph websites if the Mirror's too working class/right wing for you.

Admittedly we should wait for "The Weekly Socialist Trekkie" to comment perhaps before passing full judgment.

Corden is "in" with the X-Factor mob, so therefore clearly in the right.

Yep. So it looks like the media are backing Cordon. Probably makes sense: he'll be around longer.

The trouble with Patrick Stewart is that he fights his Picard typecasting. He should just roll with it Nimoy style.
