Does this use Wii Motion Plus?
Also, is it out this year?
Forgive me, I've been out of the (Nintendo) loop for quite some time, but will soon be picking up a new black Wii with Motion Plus as there's been a price cut and I've suddenly developed an overpowering urge to play Nintendo games again for the first time in years. -

Registered 16 years agoLooks pretty good for a Wii game, though much like Twilight Princess the environments are taking a hit so that the characters can have more detail lavished on them. The dungeons look really sparse and flat. -

Registered 17 years agoJust spent the day demoing this at "London E3" for Nintendo.
We were showing 3 areas:
Flying.
Dungeon.
Boss Battle.
I found Twilight Princess fairly uninspiring. I thought it was incredibly easy and not fresh in the way that you expect a Zelda title to be. Generally I was left feeling cold.
Skyward sword (while perhaps not hitting the same high notes as when OoT came out) is still much more appealing.
The art style is very cool and effective, but it is probably the motion plus that does the most to create this appealing feeling, with sword strikes, and puzzles all showing it off in generally subtle and very unintrusive ways.
Also the difficulty generally feels to have been turned up a notch. Puzzles took a little while to solve, and I watched enough people die today to reinforce this point.
The game seems to be far more confident in its stylings than TP was, and I'm really hopeful that this game will be a beauty. I'm also very tempted to find out who I lent my Wii to so I can get back on the Zelda band wagon.
If anyone wants further more detailed impressions then please ask.
(I was also demoing, M&S Olympics, Kirby, Malgrave something (a Myst like adventure), Rhythm Heaven, and Xenoblade Chronicles if anyone is interested in any of those.) -

Sounds great, Ace. Nintendo have gone back to making Zelda the way they see it instead of pandering to the masses \o/ -

Registered 14 years agoCertainly looks good, well at least it means the Wii will be switched on this year.
I really hope it works well with Dolphin though. -

Should run lovely on my new 2500k PC -

Registered 17 years agoI miss the simplicity of Wind Waker but it looks like they've kept the style and upped the detail level for more expressive results. I hope they still have the mix of colourful and monochrome art direction;

If they released it for the Wii U i would have incentive to buy that console. -

Will do.

Let's turn another Wii thread into a Dolphin emulation discussion! -

Registered 17 years agoMore impressions. I'll give it a go.
The demo takes place roughly midway through the game I would guess. You are an adult with an inventory of roughly 10 - 12 slots.
You access the inventory by pressing B. Hold it, and a wheel appears on screen with the various weapons to choose from. It's nice and quick. Link had already unlocked the bow (which had unlimited arrows in the demo), bombs, the sling shot, and a new weapon which is a scarab beetle of sorts that can be launched and then flown around the room using the wii motion plus to guide its flight.
A few of the puzzles needed you to use the scarab: There are several diamond shaped rubies in the room which, when hit, unlock a door. You use the scarab to fly into tunnels or round corners which you can't reach. Fairly obvious stuff, but entertaining to do none the less. You could also use cut ropes and collect items.
Interestingly the weapons appear to be upgradeable. I would guess this is going to be a big part of this title, because upgrading your scarab is probably the main thing that everyone who plays this demo will experience. I'm not sure that weapons upgrades happen in any other Zelda title?
The upgrade comes in the form of a chest with a weapon in it after beating a boss like character (at first you think you've discovered a new weapon). The upgraded beetle allows you to pick things up and drop stuff, although the demo didn't require its use so I didn't see this feature in action.
Unlocking the chest required you to battle a big bastard skeleton, who was fun and showed off the motion plus again, this time with sword fighting. The skeleton holds his swords to block your attacks in various ways, you have to angle your strike in either a horizontal, vertical, or angled strike to hit him where he's vulnerable. Proving they're getting Zelda right this time, when you first fight him he's a tricky fucker, but once you "get it" he's easy and a joy to destroy. EDIT: A nice touch is that as you destroy him, you break off the bones on his ribcage.
On the subject of combat: When you move your wiimote around Link does the same with the sword. Very cool. One puzzle in particular and a boss battle require you to move Link's sword around in various ways to get the desired outcome (the boss walks slowly towards you with an outstretched palm that follows your blade. Every time you go to strike, he catches your sword. You have to move his hand to one side slowly, and then quickly strike him from the other direction. He's a cocky androgynous prick as well, so you take great pleasure in battering him).
The spin attack is back, this time you can do it vertically or horizontally, by shaking your nunchuk and wiimote like a pair of maracas. Also if you hold your sword in the air like He-man, a blue glow engulfs the blade from tip to hilt, and then you can unleash a more powerful attack. Again, very cool.
Link can now sprint if you hold A, and an energy bar like in Mario 64 appears to show Links stamina. It of course recharges when you stop sprinting. Using spin attacks also drains this.
You don't appear to be able to use the bow while locked onto enemies which is a shame, not sure about the slingshot. Using the bow is fine, you treat the nunchuck like the string and pull it back. The targeting reticicle gets smaller as you do so and charges up. As I got used to it, I would just jolt my nunchuck in a backward fashion and then the charge would initiate, so it probably won't be used exactly how Nintendo imagine by the hardcore.
Flying the bird was fun, but as you'd expect. It seems to have taken some influence from Avatar here. Z seems to work as a lock on facility while on the bird so I expect there will be some fighting to be had.
That's about all I have time for for now. Any other questions I'll do my best to answer them. -

Registered 17 years agoI'm no expert, but I know what I like, and I like the graphics.
It looks like a toned down version of Windwaker. Not as bright colours.
Most importantly, it all fits; it feels well polished and consistent in tone throughout. It's a very attractive game (in fact all of the games on Wii had really impressive visuals at the show). -

Registered 17 years agoRhythm Heaven, Kirby, Xenoblade chronicles (briefly), M&S Olympics, and I think it was called the Malgrave Files or something (a bit like Myst).
Kirby and Rhythm Heaven were the most interesting. The lad who was demoing Xenoblade all day said that was pretty good as well. He likened it to Monster Hunter.
Kirby's art style is gorgeous and 4 player is a laugh.
Rhythm Heaven had a cool art style as well, and some unique, warioware-like gameplay. -
You mentioned upgrades to items in Zelda. Are these just improved versions of the item already held i.e. a separate, replacement item or proper upgrades to the one already held?
Various Zelda games have had upgraded items which replaced the existing ones but not sure about attachments/upgrades... -

Registered 17 years agoNo worries Ecosse. I like doing it.
You replace the item, with a bigger, better looking version of said item with more abilities. The old item is no longer available to select.
The bombs don't look like the traditional Zelda bombs so I'm guessing they're in line for an upgrade. As previously mentioned, most people who play the demo will get the upgrade, so I'm speculating that Nintendo is hinting to us that all of the weapons will discover an upgrade as the game progresses.
I forgot to mention one other interesting thing:
The master keys have been overhauled. Now it is a strange shaped block that you must rotate (motion plus) to fit into whatever shape is on the door. In this case it was an h shaped hole. Nice way to end the demo.
That said, I'm not sure a lot of people will see it, because the demo had a 10 minute time limit, and I had to play it many times, figuring out each puzzle as I went, and then speed running the whole thing to get to the end...
...and I was getting paid. Yesterday was a good day
