High pixel density on laptops is nothing new. Some of our old Dells had a ludicrous 1920x1200 resolution on a 15" screen. But you can't have that sort of resolution AND improve image quality in applications (i.e. make that res. usable) unless your OS and the Apps are produced to take advantage of it.
Dirtbox wrote:
Yeah, it is a nice development. It feels way behind schedule though, hopefully the other manufacturers start upping the screen res a bit too now over the next couple of years. 1920x1080 ultrabook from ASUS looks decent too.
This retina business is actually pretty cool, it beats the fuzzy font smoothing they have anyway and it's about time Apple did something to set themselves apart from the usual fair of deeply average laptops in a metal case.
It just worries me that they may well have patented the screen resolution or something stupidly greedy and knowingly obstructive.
What Apple does well is bringing the tech and the software together to make it offer something worthwhile.
Having said that though, they can fuck off with soldered RAM and Glued batteries! Apple are constantly waving their Eco friendly cock about, but if you have to replace entire laptops to fix one (potentially minor) fault, surely there are some serious questions to ask about wastage no?
..still want one though. Damn them. -
Soldered RAM? Fucking hell that's some bad shit!
/also wants one. -

Long story short, about 18 months ago, apple changed the design of the iMac HDDs so you cant put cheap third party drives into an out of warranty machine, you have to use Apple parts, effectively tripling the repair bill for the consumer.

Registered 12 years agoFuck there was me thinking I could upgrade it myself in a few years. Bugger
Might call them back to see if I can get the Ram based up to 16gb. It could be useful for messing about with matlab. -

Registered 16 years agoTo give them the most meagre of credit, doubling up the memory from 8 to 16gb is 'only' 160 quid. I thought it would be much, much more than that given their recent form. -

Would the fact it's DDR3L knock the price up? I seem to remember that low voltage parts add a small premium. Not that it justifies a 100% price bump.

Hence the reason its meagre credit. Memory upgrades used to be even more arse wateringly expensive.

Well I've just spoken to a college who is planning a project that needs Matlab, so it would be useful for that. The Mrs works as a freelance Visual artist so it would come in handy for After Effects and other visual packages (I can't remember the names of the other ones off the top of my head). I imagine it will come in handy for Final Cut Pro as well.

I'm sure they'll be other things that will take advantage of it over the years. -

Yes it bloody does. My quad MBP with 4GB RAM runs like shit if I'm actually DOING anything remotely taxing, where my old dual with the same amount of RAM was always smooth in Snow Leopard. I'll be buying 8GB for this machine the second I have the cash.

Registered 14 years agoSafari is the main offender, particularly the 'Safari Web Content' process which regularly eats so much actual RAM as to slow my entire machine down and start the fans running. Shame I don't like any other browsers :s -

Then there must be something wrong with your MBP. My little Mini has 4GB ram and runs Lion like a charm.
