Listened to Frank Skinner on Desert Island Discs over the weekend, and his last music choice was something by The Fall (Bash & Smash, or something like that). It was also the one song of the eight that he'd take if push came to shove. And I'm currently listening to 'Plastic Beach' by Gorillaz, and Mr Smith has just turned up as a guest vocalist. How the fuck did he get any kind of career in music? Emperors New Clothes? Emperors New Sack of Shit! Seriously. Anybody care to waste their time trying to defend him? |

Are you kidding? John Peel's favourite band or not, a more talentless pile of dross I have not heard in ages. -

Posted this in another thread a while back, but it seems pertinent
Lauren Laverne vs Mark E Smith
I quite like him to be honest. Mind you I don't mind The Fall either :/ -

Registered 18 years agoYes, you do indeed need a vocal range like Leona Lewis to be a professional vocalist ! Fuck off Bob Dylan. -

Registered 18 years agoVocal range has nothing to do with it. Sinatra didn't have a technically great voice, but his way with a song, plus the great melodies and marvellous arrangements made for an awsome result.
The Fall is just some bloke who sounds like he's drunk, mumbling bollocks over a bunch of people who count 'tuning up and fucking about' as 'playing'. -

I can't believe I was that gullible in my student days to have a few albums. -

Edit: Just one link now, since TTV nicked my first link while I was searching for it

Mark E Smith's appearance on that Gorillaz track is pretty underwhelming.
The Fall had a great run of albums from '77 through the 80s though, and boo should probably listen to This Nation's Saving Grace or Live at the Witch Trials or Hex Enduction Hour before making a knee-jerk reaction based on fucking Desert Island Discs. Lawdy. -

Registered 18 years agoSadly, this was not my first exposure to the "work" of Mr Smith and his colleagues. D.I.D., plus the Gorillaz track just prompted me to vent my spleen.
I don't doubt that everybody could find some object of ridicule in my CD collection, but at least there are tunes in there!*
*Ok - Michael Brecker - Two Blocks From The Edge, that's a tune free zone. -
You'd have to be tone deaf if you think there are no "tunes" in The Fall's work. I regularly have songs by them stuck in my head. -
It's hardly noise music, boo. Aside from the vocals a lot of the songs are very tuneful, like dg said. Cruiser's Creek and Container Drivers are really catchy songs, f'rinstance. -

Registered 18 years agoOk. Consulting my iPod, I appear to have three songs by The Fall.
Mr Pharmacist
A cover version of Legend Of Xanadu
Arid Al's Dream
I shall listen to them and pass judgement. -

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think those songs are a prominent part of the, er, Fall canon. Listen to those albums I mentioned earlier if you're willing to give the band a chance. -

Registered 15 years agoEat Yr Self Fitter, Bill is Dead, How I wrote Elastic Man are all nice and accessible but I agree a lot of their stuff is hard work. I've also seen them live twice in recent years (my mate is a big fan and I went along with him) and they were dreadful. -
The Classical is soooooo proto-Pavement, specially when played through laptop speakers.
Very listenable -

Odd you should mention Pavement, as that's how I came to listen to The Fall back when 'Slanted and Enchanted' was released

Well Sparta FC should be enjoyable for most ears. Try that.
On a side note: mark smith reading the football results always has me smiling:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBUiPs1PxKo
