Fair enough. As far as I know, the most popular one for turning the DVD into video as opposed to an ISO file (a file which is just a carbon copy of the data on the disc) is [link=http://handbrake.fr/">Handbrake. If they are copy-protected DVDs (i.e. not home-made), you can use Handbrake in conjunction with

I think DVD Decrypter has an option to extract as the files rather than an ISO, and if not DVD Shrink can do that. There are lots of media players and some DVD players that will play DVD video files straight off a disc or hard drive or whatever.

If space isnt an issue use MakeMKV. Will create an MKV of the film, without touching the video or audio, but stripping out everything on the disk you dont want. Makes a large file, but is very quick, and has the bonus of being the best quality possible.

Thanks for mentioning MakeMKV gamingdave, seems like a really cool tool. Do you know if it decrypts or will I have to use DVD43?

Any handbreak users have any suggestions on the optimum settings? Thinking about ripping all my films to an external drive for play back on the PS3.

I always had a lot problems with handbrake and now I use Format Factory which has many many settings. Make sure you switch off the ask.com toolbar install during the install wizard. otherwise it is mighty fine.

Universal setting.

You could skip the 2 channel AAC channel, but then the files wouldn't be compatible with other devices.

I'm confused with DVD Decrypter.

I'm trying to copy a box-set of cartoons for my nephew, as essentially he's already fucked up one of the discs and my brother doesn't want to have to pay for any more repairs to them, and it's not as easy as I remember when I did it back in 2006 or whenever it was.

So I've put the disc in and asked DVD Decrypter to burn it on to my hard drive as DVD files (so the VSO or whatever they are, not an ISO image). Now when I try to copy it back on to a DVD...I can't actually work out how. I'm thoroughly confused. Does DVD Decrypter not have a 'copy to disc' function?

OK - total DVD ripping novice, so apologies in advance...

I'm looking for some [u]free[/u], decent and easy to use software to rip some DVDs into MP4/AVI/MKV format for me to copy to, and watch on, my tablet. Lots of names mentioned above, so I'd appreciate some suggestions as to my best option.

Additionally, slightly off topic, but where would be the best place for me to [u]legally[/u] acquire digital versions of films/TV series'?

It's been a while since I last used it, and it's been a while since you asked, but I think it just decrypts old DVDs and rips. You need something else, like Handbrake, to process the rips.

Flying_Pig = DVD Decrypter to rip, then Handbrake for writing, used to be a great pair of freebies for writing MKV and MP4 (not WAV, and not sure about AVI). I used them anyway. Handbrake scales really well on multi-cores too. Don't know what the current favourites are.

Would think that running dvd43 in the background bypasses the need for using dvddecryper. I.e run dvd43 then just use handbrake to covert the dvd to mp4/whatever. Dunno though, as I haven't really looked in to this since I last posted in this thread

Legally getting copies of films you already own for mobile viewing? You're looking at buying it again, really. iTunes etc.

I've found that when using DVD 43 and handbrake it doesn't get round the copy protection of Sony films. So sadly I had to make do without casino royale on my iPod

OK, so using a combination of DVD Decrypter and Handbreak which seems to work OK, however when watching the film, I occasionally get (what I can best describe as) 'blocking' whereby the picture distorts into large blocks for a couple of frames, usually in fast moving scenes.

I don't think it's my media player as it claims to be able to handle HD movies, so I wonder if it's the settings I'm using on Handbreak. I am using standard settings (i.e. I haven't changed anything), but am thinking maybe a few tweaks might fix the problem...?
