Moriaty is dead. Sherlock set up the broadcast to go out automatically because he'd already been told he was to be shipped off on a fatal mission, and he knew this would force the government to recall him.

Sherlock season 4 could come sooner than expected: “We’re working on dates” says producer

"We'll get them made as quickly as we can," adds co-creator Steven Moffat of the new episodes

"Should we expect a similar sort of wait for the next series or are you tempted to try and get it done in a year this time?"

That was one of the cheekier questions from the audience at last night's screening of Sherlock series three finale His Last Vow. But after Steven Moffat had indulged himself briefly at the questioner's expense – asking how many Sherlock films he had made lately – the overall sense was that viewers might be waiting less than the traditional two years to see the next run of the detective drama.

"We’re working on it. We’re working on dates," producer Sue Vertue assured the room, while her husband, Sherlock co-creator Moffat, promised "We'll get them made as quickly as we can".

Also showrunner on the BBC's other fan favourite Doctor Who, Moffat is a busy man – as is his Sherlock partner Mark Gatiss, who splits his time betwen writing and acting. But the sticking point in filming new episodes has increasingly been the availability of stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, whose careers are going stratospheric, thanks in no small part to the BBC1 detective drama.

"Benedict and Martin are making some movies," pointed out a deadpan Moffat. "If you say 'Who cares about movies?' I agree with you but they are doing them so we’ve got to schedule around that."

Then again, if Moffat did want to start filming a new series of Sherlock immediately, it seems at least one of his stars could fit it into his diary.

"Martin’s free for now," chipped in Amanda Abbington. And as Freeman's on- and off-screen partner, she should know.

Sherlock: Complete Series 3 is released on DVD and Blu-ray on 20 January and is available to pre-order at BBC Shop now.

Something along those lines, I reckon. Although how Sherlock made it broadcast over every possible media simultaneously, I dunno. For it's all about "the other one" Mycroft mentioned.

    Great series. Love it.

Plus they clearly love the guy who played him and brought him back from the dead purely down to fan reaction (if he really is dead. most likely its his long lost sister or some crap).

I wonder if we'll see a third Holmes?

Watched the last episode last night and it was pretty damn good. So that leaves The hounds of baskerville episode from last season being the shittest in my books.

That "other holmes" comment threw me a bit. Surely his parents or someone would of at least said something by now if there was another one.

Apparently there was a lot of speculation about another sibling in Conan Doyle's time. Maybe it was just a nod to that.

I'd prefer least great, but yeah.

Yeah, it's still the best thing on TV right now. Everything else I've seen had been pretty dire so far.

Errm, someone did, Mycroft mentioned it.

In the Twitter Q&A after the last episode someone asked Moffat what character he'd like to play if he were to act in the series and he replied with "The other one". Makes me think they don't have any plans to use it. At least, not yet.

Apologies if this has already been speculated - couldnt find it in the thread if so...or if this seems like a daft idea...

But could Moriarty be...the other one?

Would explain his similar gifts and being Sherlocks polar opposite. I realise there'd be some explaining to do in terms of how they dont know theyre related, but not exactly out beyond the realms of Moffat if they can spin a secret agent backstory for Mary. Maybe he was unstable, sent away, they thought he had died blah blah.

Not sure if this is Sherlock heresy, but would be an interesting twist.

I remember reading a Sherlock Holmes book, many, many years ago, in which Holmes was actually from the future (something like the 25th Century) in which he was one of many clones created as stage actors; they were created with exceptional memories, to facilitate memorisation of thousands of plays, superb physical abilities and reflexes so that they could perform whatever was required of them, and a face which suited the application of various makeups to more readily play a multitude of parts. All things which Holmes exploited in his role as a detective, but the big reveal was that Moriarty was also one of these clones, essentially making him his brother, who had suffered some kind of genetic flaw during "production" and had been murdering people at the various venues they'd been performing at, in the future.

I can't, for the life of me, recall the explanation for how they'd travelled through time, but by that point the exact circumstances were a moot point amongst all the WTF?-ness of what I was reading.

EDIT: Dug out the name of the book, "Exit Sherlock Holmes" by Robert Lee Hall. If anyone's tempted, managed to find a download location, click on the "rar" link here:

Finally caught up, great stuff. The writing is so damn tight. Thoroughly enjoyable, if a little silly at times.

Yeah, I enjoyed it a lot. The wedding do was the best one for me, the last ep was spoiled because as soon as the spectacles were revealed as normal, I knew he'd have to kill him, so there was no reveal for me, just played out to an inevitable conclusion.
  • Deleted user 20 January 2014 12:53:28
We've only got Sherlock's version of Moriarty's death, which is probably as deceitful as the version of his own death.
  • Deleted user 20 January 2014 12:55:46
This is on blinkbox by the way. To buy or rent (season 1 and 2) if anyone is interested. The HD buying option is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying it on blu-ray too.

Although it is only 720p and Stereo.

He deserves a whole spinoff series. Solving crimes while ODing.
    Smackhead ftw.
Following on from the fears of Sherlock becoming as unconvincing as Doctor Who, Smackhead would have to be Captain Jack, leading the merry band of rainbow rascals from Torchwood HQ. Joy.

Just watched the second episode last night and was enjoying it right up until the solution of people not knowing they have been stabbed if they are wearing a belt. Up until that part I had not had to go wtf once over terrible writing. Normal service resumed I guess.

It appears we're getting something Sherlock related at 2:21pm tomorrow (annoyingly, a time I wont be at a computer).

Hmm...they did say the scripts were ready for the next season and it was more about timing for the actors that would get in the way. Maybe they did last season and jumped back in straight afterwards? 2.21...hmm...

Fair enough, it was just news on filming dates then. Ah well, good to know we wont have to wait too long for the next episode!
