Any recommended online retailers for any/all of the games platforms?

    Ones to avoid?

I used www.simplygames.co.uk for GC TimeSplitters2 last week, cheapest I could find and delivered a day early.

Website probably a tad too colourful if you have a hangover but otherwise no complaints.

    Edit: idiotic pasting. both times.

simplygames are on my avoid like the plague list after buying my DC off them. It took two weeks for the phone to be answered, all emails were ignored. They could have improved by now tho.

I haven't had any problems with Gameplay recently, I did a few years back though.

I was recommended by a friend for their cheapness and I'm sure he's used them regularly without problems.

Amazon are always reliable and Play.com are cheap with free postage, but just tend to be a bit slow.

So if you wanted a game on the day or release which retailers are good at that?

I used to use Gameplay but they are a bit expensive for XBox games, so I switched to play who have become very slow.

www.dvdcrave.com in Australia for PAL stuff. Doing a good offer on a wavebird + GC game at the mo.

www.lik-sang.com Hong-Kong based for import and 'development' stuff, all formats.

www.dvdboxoffice.com for imports stuff all formats.

www.ncsx.com US based for import stuff all formats

All been reliable and quick in my experience, tho' I have heard other people moan about dvdcrave and dvdboxoffice delivery times.

I guess the only sure fire way of getting a game on the day of release is to buy it in person from a shop. If there's going to be a drought in supply, then most places will let you reserve a copy.

The only on-line retailer I know of that is generally pretty good at getting the game to you on the day of release is the aforementioned Gameplay.

What we all *really* want to know is: are you going to be as cheap as the on-line competition??? :)

Uh, oh. Sounds a bit like the fox looking after the hen house. What guarantees do we have that reviews are independant?

Well, many other on-line retailers seem to manage that one okay, and the forum community here sould keep any outrageous behaviour in check I reckon.

At the end of the day, if Eurogamer were to become a mere "brochure" for games buying (which I don't for a moment think that it will), then most of the regulars here who value it for its content will simply go elsewhere. And that wouldn't be good for the shop or the site.

"What guarantees do we have that reviews are independant?"

What guarentees do you ever have? Some people say that running games advertising will mean lack of independent review as well.

Surely it also depends on how the shop is set up and run and how it is integrated with EG.

Anyway - this should be moved off to another thread if its going to continue.

It will be a different website, for starters.

Editorial decisions will remain separate from commercial decisions.

We're not so stupid as to throw away the trust we've built up with our readership over the past 3 years, you can have a guarantee on that.

    Blerk: Yes

Killerbee: We will be the same price as Gameplay (i.e. cheaper than almost everyone apart from play - but much better service & a cool site and content)

Errol: Not to begin with, but I guess if there is demand :)

Feersum Boundah: Well, one of the USPs of the EG shop is that we are only going to stock games that the editorial team recommend (the motto we used at ECTS was "Never buy a lousy game again").

Also, the EG shop is a separate site to EG itself. I guess it is possible to come up with all kinds of conspiracy theories, but ultimately you have to trust that we wouldn't try and push crap product onto you because our success depends on good word of mouth and a good reputation - which would be destroyed by corrupt reviews.

There was a photographer on Eurotrash last night who appeared to have naked HV pics - either that or a double.
