Just thought I’d put together a post with some info that I’ve seen in interviews, read about and looking at some footage. I don’t consider them spoilers but I guess if you want the whole game to come as a surprise you should maybe stop reading. Most of this info is being compared to Demon’s Souls. From what I’ve seen this game is DS2, built from the exact same engine, same HUD, lock-on system, combat style, soul acquisition etc.

    - General: Developer has said there will be from 1.5 to 2 times more armour, weapons, items in this compared to Demon’s Souls (not sure about magic). As has been previously stated I think the game world will be continuous i.e. you see a place and you can get there. However dev said there will also be a hub, which makes sense I guess if you need to get from one end of the world to the other quickly.

    - Character classes: More classes to pick from. Seen in the footage were Knight, Soldier, Pyromancer, Witch, Black Knight and an awesome Crusader-style knight.

    - Combat: Looks like quite a few more moves for weapons, both one- and two-handed. The ability to jump seems to have been added too. Developer mentioned you will be able to upgrade your weapon skills, so faster swings, more moves etc.

    - Magic: Didn’t seem to be a magic bar on the HUD, maybe just not implemented yet or maybe spells work on a cooldown basis.

    - Bonfires: These appear to work as checkpoints and you return to them when you die (and the level repopulates as usual). Apparently you have limited health items (5 I think), so you can’t hoard grass like in DS. “Strengthening” a bonfire will give you more health, as well as benefiting fellow gamers in some way. However this action comes with some sacrifice, although the dev didn’t say what, maybe costs souls, or uses an special item (like Stone of Ephemeral Eyes).

    - Multiplayer: Joystiq reported that you could have 3 Black Phantom invaders, but then changed it to say any combination of blue and black phantoms up to 3. However I didn’t see this confirmed by a dev. Generally they’ve said they’ve improved how multiplayer works, but I’ve not seen any details (maybe they added friend list options).

    - Other: Apparently one of the characters in the E3 demo will have a negative influence on all other characters in their worlds. Not sure what that’s all about (I’m guessing it’s the dark knight), but it may tie in to some system similar to character tendency.

Feel free to add anything if you like, or correct anything I’ve said you think may be different.

Those were just the classes in the E3 demo, the fact they've said there'll be more classes than Demon's Souls means there will almost certainly be a thief.

Shame they didn't fix the abysmal physics on corpses. Raggedly ragged dolls FTL.

Go to 1:44 to see what I mean

    wutlol?
that's nothing, i've had fallen enemies follow me back to the archstone. why on earth does that annoy you, its not like it affects the combat at all. ;)

It is rather immersion breaking, but I suppose the alternatives were either even less desirable or too difficult to implement in their engine. It's something I hoped they'd find a solution for this time but it's not a big deal.

As good Dr mentioned mentioned above, it's a little immersion breaking that's all. Given the world is based on weighty combat that feels visceral and people hold it up as a beacon of how it should be done it's a shame they didn't employ the same attention to detail to that element. Granted, it's no deal breaker but one would have hoped they rectified. I suppose, as this is not a direct sequel, they just took the existing engine and ran with it.

I quite like. Kicking around the corpses was half the fun in DS.

Does Dark Souls still have the soul form thingy? I really don't care for pvp but enjoyed reading all the messages so stayed in soul form most of the time.

    /hides

Nooooo! I need all my grass! Bloody hell, it'll be even more tense now

I heard something somewhere (Sorry, couldn't be more vaguer) about you being able to turn into a stationery object to avoid detection. Can't remember if this was against invader's or just a general feature.

Be a bit strange to be able to turn yourself into a table wouldn't it?
  • Deleted user 14 June 2011 16:49:19
It'd be amazing! Imagine a BP entering your game and you quickly hiding yourself as an object in a room - trying to make yourself look like you belong there, so the far more powerful BP doesn't find you.

They enter, sniffing about... you wait, cacking yourself...

Shopto just mailed me about my preorder - the game guide is now apparently going to be a full guide rather than a mini version and will be download only.

    That is pretty shit.

Where do you go to see the message? I've got the email off Shopto saying they've raised a ticket and I need to log in to see it but I don't know where to go.

It's called contact center or something similar on your account page - the last tab

Thanks mate, just read it. They try and make it sound like it's fucking awesome but I would've preferred the hard copy to be honest.

maybe there's good reason. there're going to be way more items, armours and weapons, so a small guide (ala demon's souls) would be impractical. it is inconvenient tho, i'll give you that! ;)

    We haz a winnah !

Facebook Shield Design competition winner, and tbh, I'd prefer any of the other featured submissions. The wooden plank one is a neat twist, probably my favourite.
