That was so tense. Solaire didnít last very long, but it did give me enough to off Ornstein. Then Smough and I had a slug off, and it came down to next hit wins. I hit.

I canít believe a game gives me so much adrenaline!
    Haha brilliant :) well done!

I bet you were shaking like a shitting dog :D

Since becoming a @Graxlar_v3 approved Not DS Noob, I have:

Fallen into a pit in the asylum and been killed by the Stray Demon, losing 28k souls.
Tried to get back to the bottom of Blighttown and been killed by two mosquitoes and a big chopper dude when trapped in a corner, losing 15k souls.
Got into the library and been murdered repeatedly by crystal people, losing 8k souls.

Being not a noob is hard.

@Singularity This might be a good time to do the DLC, which will promptly kill you so often and so brutally that you will be left a weeping, gibbering wreck.

@Graxlar_v3 I did not kill the demon. Quite the opposite, in fact.

I can warp around, but not all my bonfires are listed, I don't think.

The DLC is accessed in the same way on all platforms, but it is unintuitive and easy to miss. I've put the steps you need to follow in spoilers below, but be warned that the difficulty of the DLC content is very high.

    1) Go to Darkroot Basic (accessed by descending the path near the entrance to Darkroot Garden).

    2) Kill the Hydra there. This is a moderately tough fight, though not classed as a boss.

    3) Now, either leave and re-enter Darkroot Garden, or (the faster option) quit and reload the game.

    4) Fron where you killed the Hydra, track around to the left, going into the shallow water and following the left hand edge. Don't go up the ladder when you pass it (that's an alternative path to the back end of Darkroot Garden), but instead press on through the shallow water.

    5) You'll eventually see a yellow crystal golem ahead. Kill it. It hits hard, but it moves slowly and its attacks are easy to dodge or avoid.

    6) When the golem dies, an NPC will spawn out of it. Be careful you do not accidentally hit her. Instead, talk to her until her dialogue is exhausted.

    7) Now, backtrack to a bonfire to warp out and make your way to the Duke's Archive (the library where you got killed by the crystal guys before). Just inside the entrance is another crystal golem. When you kill it, it will drop a Broken Pendant (you can kill it before this point, but it won't drop the pendant - don't worry, though, as it respawns).

    8) Once you have the pendant, go all the way back to where you fought the crystal golem in Darkroot Basin. A portal will appear. Go through it to access the DLC.

Once you're in the DLC, you can use bonfires to warp in and out of it at will, so you aren't locked into finishing it once you've started.

@quadfather Nope! Is she in the Darkroot place? Iíve steered clear of there ever since stumbling in way back.

Just been in the Demons Ruins, killing worms and minotaurs. Have found a bonfire there for a change!

Yes, but since you haven't done it yet, and are thinking of doing the dlc, I'd carry on with the dlc first.

It's impossible to comment on this game on my phone due to the lack of a spoiler option, but I'm very much enjoying it at the minute. It's incredibly tense!

I'm in the sewers. Found myself a great spot to take out a large enemy and then discovered some seriously damaging little enemies that are rally beaten, but scary to come across when distracted by other foes.

@Graxlar_v3 Yeah they got me. I decided to press on with the punishment just until I was comfortable fighting them. Stumbled into a rather large boss before deciding it was probably best to fix the predicament I found myself in.

Ended up gathering a lot of souls on that journey though. Levelled up 4 times in about half an hour!

So I've killed the fire demon dude in Demon Ruins, and it took a few goes but the centipede demon is down too. Managed to chop off his tail for the fire ring (these demons do have useful tails). Now faffing around in the firey bit beyond where Solaire was being all moany and coy about whatever it is he is looking for. It's amazing how things change - I met one of the little minotaur dudes previously and ran away, now I chop them down in moments.

@Singularity Ah, so you're in Lost Izalith now. This is probably the roughest area in the game (along with Demon Ruins before it), with fairly crude design and a really annoying and rather luck-based boss. While it's never been confirmed by From Software, it's widely believed that this area had to be rushed so that the game could go out the door on time. I'm not sure whether that's the case, or whether it was just a experimental attempt at alternative types of level and encounter design which didn't quite work out, but it's certainly the weakest part of the game.

@Rogueywon Oh, I was quite enjoying the Ruins and Izalith! I liked the masonry in the Ruins, and I'm always partial to the lava level.

@Singularity Yes, I think some of the hate for the area is over-blown and I enjoyed it on my first playthrough. I suspect its reputation really comes from long-term players who've played the game through many times (like me). Once you've seen it a few times, the lava bits really start to grate and the boss at the end of the area can be particularly infuriating, as it involves a fair degree of luck and can therefore trip up otherwise smooth playthroughs.

Fan of Demon Ruins and Lost Iziliath here...although the run to Twat of Chaos is obnoxious.

Yup I also like demon ruins and lost izalith even after multiple playthroughs. Whether it was rushed or not doesn't really bother me. I really like the atmosphere there.

I just spent my lunch break murdering leaping fire demons in Ixalith when I realised that they didn't respawn. But now I feel like I'm destroying an endangered eco-system.

@Singularity An endangered ecosystem of leaping fire demons. They're not cute and marketable, so I doubt PETA would care.

Worrying about the extinction of those bloody Izalith demons is like worrying about the population decline of public lice due to habitat-loss caused by Brazilian deforestation.
