    I working as learning disabilty psychiatrist at the moment and the needs of people with autism is not the same as aspergers. Aspergers tend to function in society. Autistics need a lot more support in terms of challenging behavior.

    Very true, different ends of the spectrum with different difficulties - but there is an argument that AS is even more "invisible", and various studies prove that people with AS are severely overlooked and not getting the help they need.

    PS - AS (and Classic Autism) isn't a learning disability in itself. Grrr. Get in the naughty corner.

    I dunno, you don't seem to be learning that most of us are sick of hearing about it very quickly.

    It isn't but 80% of autism have a learning disability . The rest are high functioning if their language is impaired. And if their language is normal they are labelled with aspergers.

    True, but the separation between Asperger's and HFA is looking like it's being dissolved soon (it practically is anyway). In fact, AS as a separate diagnosis itself is likely to be dissolved - rumblings are that the next edition of the DSM will instead simply give a single diagnosis of Autism, with a sliding scale of severity - something that I'm not really happy with.

    But the uk uses ICD. I think labels are useless. People seem desperate for a label rather than what their needs are these days.

    If I see another teenage girl who insists she's "bipolar like brittney". I will kill

    Really? Not come across that lol.

    I do think some celebrities are actually good at de-stigmatising certain conditions though. Stephen Fry has done wonders for getting rid of negative perceptions of Bipolar, for example.

    I thought so, anyway. People never say "Stephen Fry? He's a weirdo!"

    They always say "Stephen Fry is awesome".

    Which is true, he IS awesome. All kinds of awesome in fact.

    @Dirtbox

    For a while he was, the media made a big thing about it, and he did a series of documentaries about it as well.

    But I love Stephen Fry for his wit and intelligence above all else.

    Yeah, he has spoken about it, but doesn't bring it up all the time.

    The problem with this sort of thing is that you're in danger of letting one thing about you define who you are (in others' eyes).

    Except, what is important in life is largely subjective and subject to change, isn't it? As a rough example, if you found yourself repeatedly targeted or discriminated against based on the colour of your skin, would you not then find yourself more interested in combating racial discrimination? Or, if you are black (for example) but had never found yourself targeted, then it would not occur to you to try and address that imbalance.

    If that makes sense.
