My google search for "black midgets" reveals to me that all of them appear to be porn stars. The cloud has silver lining!

Except, what is important in life is largely subjective and subject to change, isn't it? As a rough example, if you found yourself repeatedly targeted or discriminated against based on the colour of your skin, would you not then find yourself more interested in combating racial discrimination? Or, if you are black (for example) but had never found yourself targeted, then it would not occur to you to try and address that imbalance.

    If that makes sense.

People choose to support various causes, whether they directly affect them or not, for all kinds of reasons. Saying that it wouldn't occur to you to oppose inequality if you personally hadn't suffered it is all kinds of wrong- you might have no or less reason to, but people are more complex than that.

Surely there are people who support aspergers support organisations who don't have it themselves but understand the impact it can have. Same thing.

re: Stephen Fry and his bipolar affective disorder

The media did, he kept it very much private aside from a few short words to a camera in the street. Him being bipolar has no bearing on anything about him.

Well, there was the whole prime time 2 x 60 minute episode BBC documentary The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive that he made. That wasn't him keeping it very much private. At all. And all the ambassador stuff he does for bipolar. He has made it much more fluffy and acceptable to be bipolar. Now, if only someone like Charlie Brooker could come out as having a personality disorder...

I do agree on the labelling = bad thing though. It's nice to know why things seem harder for you than others, but also very easy for individuals to begin to use them as proof of their "special uniqueness" in a way that allows them to opt out of trying to get along like everyone else, and can often distance them from "the norms" in an unhelpful manner. They are also very hard to escape from and easily become defining. If everyone could just be more tolerant and accepting of difference generally*, then we wouldn't need them as much.

*up to a point, obviously. I'm not saying it's ok to be socially tolerant of people who sexually abuse babies or anything.

So apparently I'm autistic/aspergers. I discovered this during a meeting in which we got the report of a diagnosis of my son who is too....who would thought that walking on your tip toes, liking Laurel and Hardy, and not being arsed with casual chit chat on the phone were all clear signs! All the things they point out as clear signs I have/do. And are perfectly normal as far as I'm concerned!

He's not fussed, as I can point out I've made it this far without knowing....

    Autistic/Asperger diagnoses are so 2017.

Aim for something that will really deliver at a dinner party, something like Apotemnophilia.

Googling the symptoms is one of the symptoms.

Don't know...I used to do it as a kid, and my boy does too. I assumed it was just superior athleticism. Not all the time....

Apparently he can engage in small talk, but clearly not give a shit what the other person is saying. Again, that's perfectly normal surely?!

Was Dale ranting about how heart wrenching working for the NHS was?

Someone on the forum mentioned him the other day and I started wondering about him, more specifically how he was doing on the old being alive and not dying front.

Wasn't it along the lines of "I'm not going to let it define me.

Also here's seventeen paragraphs of how I'm going to mention it every waking moment"

I'm not a fan either. And that fake half laugh that people do when they say something that isn't amusing in the least but they do it to say "we've all been there, eh? EH?" really makes my skin crawl.

If that's autism, just show me where to sign.
