Adeptus Astartes and something I can't remember. Something auxilia or other. Astra Militarum? Something.

    What a big ballon bag.

GW seem to be going a bit mental at the moment.

The latest rule sets, codexs and army books for fantasy and 40k seem to be confused messes.

    WOOF !
    HERE BOY !
    GOOD BOY !

And yep, a trophy/staff thing with captain's skulls. The eight Bloodcrushers in the wings are getting relevant SM helms to flaunt, as well as matching numerals on the noggin.

One of the inspirations, brilliant pic etched in from childhood.

Went on a gaming splurge and bought some other systems to try out. Dreadball, Dust Tactics, Warmachine, X-Wing, Dropzone and the Horus Heresy boardgame.

I shall report back with impressions, although that little lot cost a deal less than one 40k army would.

That the fandangled '3D' HH with the plastic overload ? Have the original card one, and as fiddly as that was, supposedly thon new one is even worse. Cracking game though, especially when you can complement it with all the HH goodness these days.

Yeah, the one that comes in something like a coffin.

Probably most excited about Dropzone for some reason. In the mood for a skirmish game, and the fact it comes with its own board/terrain is great.

Xwing is pretty good. It reminds me of sid meier's ace patrol, but in board game form

I was a big fan of Dust as well. The Tactics boardgame was really good for easy play and the full skirmish ruleset felt much tighter than 40k for a 'proper' miniature games. Pity it hasn't taken off more.

X-Wing is really good fun. Simple rules (but with enough depth to keep things interesting), easy and cheap to set up (essentially just need 3'x3' of table space, no scenery costs) and fast flowing (turns are played out using pilot skill numbers, so one player doesn't just sit there for ten minutes taking models off the board).

The only thing you could moan about is that the boxed game really is an intro kit. You're only going to get a handful of games out of it before it gets a bit dull. That said, it's only 25 quid, so compare that to Dark Vengeance or Warmachine for Two and you could buy another few ships to keep things interesting for the same price.

Not played any others yet but initial impressions are that Warmachine is a really high quality product. It feels like it's had some money chucked at it. Models are detailed and interesting, nice thick, glossy rulebook. Does seem like a genuine competitor to GW's systems if it takes off, which it seems to be.

Oh yeah, Warmachine is a very genuine competitor, especially in the US. It's not as much that the models are cheaper, you just need less of them (I'm using a few of the models in my Daemon army).

But it's done a good job at appealing to the tournament-type players that the GW games have been hemorrhaging over the past few years. Tighter game play and more regular updates seem to keep it more competitive.

Definitely not. The first copy I ever bought was in 1997, and the last was before 2004.

And I paid 1.95 for it.

Decided it's time to finally paint my Catachans and get myself some games.

Found out last week that there is a local club playing games on Thursday night's so I popped along to have a gander.

I was a little disappointed that 90% of attendees were kid's but oh well. Saw loads of people using Necrons, Dark Angels and chaos but not one single Eldar player.

Only one other IG player there but he was using wimpy Cadians! pah!

So far I have 2 squads of Catachans, 2 scout sentinels, a Lemon Russ, Marbo, a sniper, and a demo squad.

Bolstering the ranks from ebay. Just got these for around a tenner delivered.
    Converted Chans
    Command squad

Anyone got any tips for painting camo patterns? Will get some pics up when I've finished a few but I am in no way a good painter. Very much an amateur but with some practice and the help of youtube I hope to get somewhere half decent.

Eeek ! Not that seller !

Had stuff from him before, and the condition has always been pretty poor from someone who tries to act so businesslike. Messy glue, broken bits etc, and yet he achieves ridiculous prices, just through sheer persistence and presentation. The shonky sideways head on that first link tells me nothing has changed, and I avoid him like the plague now.

As for painting camo, just be sure to have reference material at hand, and think about washes for shading/dulling patterns. It's a lot easier than smooth white anyway....*grumble* Can't really make too much of a hash of it, but practice on any junk bits to experiment.

Started the remaining Juggs, and to recap, my Jugglord (top of page) has a nice collection of Astartes Captain skulls, numbered by Legion, and I figured I'd theme my Jugg 'letters as the bound martial essence of the deceased owners. Or something. He basically charges at someone, shakes the magic skull stick and bang, flanked by the buggers to create a big mess.

First two, based on DA and SW.
Back view, with some extra remains.

Six more to go, with corresponding helms and numeral scars.

You forgot the best part, smoggo.

There are other models that aren't William Wallace, but the fact remains Warhammer 40k has no William Wallace units. Infinity has one. That makes it better.

Yeah, Infinity is definitely something I want a go at, I like the look of the models and the slightly exaggerated paint jobs really strike a different chord to GW.

Speaking of nice minis though, I've only just been made aware of Kingdom Death. Holy shit, some of their stuff is incredible!

So......anyone know how this lahmian medium works?

Bought it thinking it was like a gloss. Its not.
  • Deleted user 6 April 2014 01:02:54
Is it not just for diluting paints to make custom glazes/washes?

It's a glaze medium. It makes your paints less opaque the more you use. Also acts as a flow aid and a drying retarder. If you've got the patience, it's a great way to build up highlights, way easier than wet blending. For the love of god though, wait until one layer is dry before putting another on otherwise it'll pull the layer below off and make you swear lots and lots.

Here looks as good as place as any...

Anyone have any links to decent painting tutorial videos/articles? I'm finally painting my character model for my Pathfinder game this weekend, so I'd like not to make it look like a garish piece of shit :)

I just dug out a load of old GW stuff from my folks loft. Loads of it is unpainted and seems to be worth a little bit on ebay (e.g. individual metal Sisters of Battle figures going for 4 each). Is that the best/only way to sell them, do we think?

Also, is there a way to find the individual model numbers for these things?

Yep, that's the best plan. Some people sell through community forums, but everyone scours ebay for stuff. The only question is whether you sell individual bits or as army packs. I guess that's up to you, though.

Getting model numbers is tough though. The basic answer is no, though. Saying that, if they don't sell them these days then just call them OOP (i.e. out of print) and I expect the person searching will know what they are better than you!

Cheers. Some of it's coming back to me now so I'm able to find actual names for things.

Apparently my Lumpin Croops Halfling Archers are worth quite a bit...
