I've got a question about the standards used for DF face off articles. In the RDR article it seemed that draw distance and frame rate was considered to be more important over visual quality. I can't have been the only person who in the side by side comparison videos saw artifacts with the rendering of the hair for the Xbox 360 version, and a bit of a flicker that kicks in for the shrubbery and grass. In fact, I'm quite confident that the time lapse video was done with the 360 version given that flicker that I saw in it. To me, based on the pictures and videos provided for the article, the PS3 version looks better, and the Xbox 360 version drawbacks go unmentioned. There's slight credit given to the better indoor lighting for the PS3 version, but there's puzzlement over the lighting outdoors as well, where it strikes me that there's outdoor lighting for the PS3 version which leads to the different look. So what are the standards? Does Digital Foundry just look at things that can be measured objectively? And if so, flickering doesn't count? |
