The irony is that Cher is a fantastic singer. She used it as an effect.

    No, ska is still shitter.
When you say ska, do you mean actual proper ska, or that ska-punk stuff? Either way you're wrong, I'm just interested.

    Ska.

The distinct sound that made that track famous was achieved using the vocoder unless I'm massively mistaken, whether or not Auto-tune was used is almost entirely incidental.

You are massively mistaken :-P Twas Autotune, the producers spent time bragging about this secret new tool they have and then some other producers figured out pretty quickly that it was autotune.

Oh and as stated, autotune is fine when used properly. Someone may have nailed a really good take of something with all the right emotion and slipped out of tune a bit at one point and autotune can correct that fairly well. It is just massively abused for effect. Of course, in my opinion I'd rather have things going slightly out of tune but that's not how studio records work.

Ah well, its not the first time, thanks for putting me straight.

Though as it happens I think the term "vocoder" would provide a handy distinction between a deliberate and obvious effect and autotune as it is more commonly used to try and hide shortcomings in a singer's performance.

What's that thing Peter Frampton uses then? Is it similar in theory?

Also a vocoder. I think the point is autotune has a vocoder function, which is the Cher thing but also does other (ideally less-noticable) stuff, too.

Weren't the original vocoders sort of intended as an actual instrument, rather than a studio tool?

Thats a talkbox - a guitar vocoder, basically.
Also heard on Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer"

Yeah, it does pretty much sum it up well.

Autotune, from what I recall of my dabbling with it, basically has an intensity setting which when set very high will jump between one pitch and another. Hence the effect, it's not got a vocoder setting, or at least the version I messed with didn't.

5 pages and no mention of N-Dubz yet? Surprising. Also add the Blackout Crew, which I find quite funny as most of their awful songs seem to revolve around them shouting about how awesome and talented they are, when in fact none of them are very good at anything, other than looking like twats.

I could never figure out if Goldie Looking Chain were serious or a piss-take (probably a mixture of both)

    If 'serious', then them.

Tbh, neither's really my cup of meat.

I like Neil Young, but Trans is my least favoured record of his.

I really like Computer Age (is that on Trans, or Re-Ac-Tor? :/ ) but I couldn't ever really get my head around the rest of it.

Much prefer his previous output, and Ragged Glory and the other later 80s noisenik stuff.

Goldie Lookin Chain always have/had their tongue very much in cheek. I thought they were brilliant, saw them support Super Furry Animals a few years back and they were really entertaining and produced better parodies than most of the people they were lampooning could manage.

Yeah, heard a few GLC songs and they are pretty funny, don't think they're very serious to be honest, whereas a group like Blackout Crew are trying to be, and are so bad they're funny.
