Matt Groening on The Simpsons' Apu row: 'People love to pretend they’re offended'

Can't see this one going away any time soon.

How difficult is it to just shut up? You made a harmless mistake Groening. Fine. Now, if you just don't comment on it and don't poke the fire, everything will be fine! Easiest thing in the world.

    Pretty good commentary.

Surprised there's no comments on the recent rumours about the creators axing Apu.

Is the show become that bad that nobody gives a shit any more, even fans of the first 8 or 9 seasons?

Personally I think it's a cop-out by the creators/writers, but also think there's no easy answer; If you change his personality/accent he's no longer Apu.

I don't know if it's that bad or not (because I haven't watched it), but yeah it's been going on for so long that pretty much all of my shits have already been given. I followed the Apu thing out of curiosity and some nostalgia (and pretty much agree that the character is a bit wrong in a modern context), but this show is not part of my life anymore.

I think I've been more aggrieved by otherwise super-right on friends who have gone all "get over it snowflakes" over Apu than the realisation of how roblematic his representation is.

Like, seeing the criticism of him as a racial stereotype played in brown-face by a white guy doing a funny voice I was more "oh shit, yeah of course". Whereas the get over it brigade's refusal to even consider why someone would find the idea of a racial stereotype played in brown-face by a white guy doing a funny voice is frustrating because they're only doing it because they should know better. If only to acknowledge it intellectually rather than emotionally.

My boy is desperate to watch it, and I'd love to watch the first 9/10 series with him but it doesn't appear to be on any of the usual streaming services.

The DVDs are mega cheap these days. 1 - 8 were the only ones worth watching. Season 9's opening episode is great, but it goes downhill very quickly and visibly after that.

Yeah, I'll have a butchers. I have no real idea when I stopped watching it, Sky used to just show episodes seemingly entirely at random

I think it's a rights thing. It never appears on sky catch-up or anything like that.

It's on every day on C4 at six and they dot episodes around weekend mornings, so if you have a pvr you should be able to build up a collection.

But, yeah, Simpsons and Futurama are pretty much my daughter's favourite shows. She even really dug disenchanted. She's been watching it since she was an embryo though, so she's well indoctrinated.

Disenchanted was comfortingly familiar I liked it a lot more than any Simpsons made in 15+ years

Yeah, I found that Fox have their own dedicated streaming service for it. Haven't got a pvr at the moment, will hunt out the dvds.

I quite enjoyed Disenchanted as well. It wasn't amazing, but it was solid entertainment. Better than any other cartoon I've seen on Netflix.

The DVD sets are worth it for the commentary alone. They do every episode, and it's great to hear the creators talking at length about your favourite episodes

I saw someone on Twitter saying they could have done something a bit more satirical where Apu himself realises he’s a stereotype and does something about it. It does feel like they missed a trick somehow.

But yeah. Literally nobody cares anymore.

I'm not sure apu is even a stereotype, he's too close to reality.

Watching the Simpsons on c4. Currently "Papa's got a brand new badge" Excellent episode from 2002, so many good scenes including The Sopranos' opening with Fat Tony.
I so wish The Simpsons was great again.

My son has been watching it on Sky One. Last night was the soap box Derby one. So good.

Yeah, it's great when they start again. My rich friend did me two VHS tapes of the Simpsons from season 2 and every episode is a pearler, so I know every line of dialogue and every frame of animation from about half of that series. I must have watched them constantly for four or five years.

Three men and a comic book, Lisa's Substitute.... all winners.

My daughter is a massive Simpsons fan and she loves the old ones, too.

I think the shark was officially jumped with the X-Files episode. Can’t remember many classic episodes after that.

So, apparently Danny Elfman just said that the show might be ending soon, possibly within the next year.

Can't say anything of value would be lost, at this point.

Freaks me out a bit that it's still going. Gone from proper former of the zeitgeist to... well, completely irrelevant.

I haven't watched an episode in years but if it did end I would definitely go out of my way to watch the last one when it airs.

I don't think I've ever watched anything on repeat as many times as much as I have prime Simpsons. Will be sad to see it go, even if it has been 'gone' for like 16-17 years for me at least. It's like that relative you never see but you know is ticking along just fine in the background.
