Thanks for the advice! But I'm rethinking getting the Saturn...I just know I won't enjoy enjoy it. Just looked at some games on youtube (sega rally and NiGHTS) and I can't see myself sinking hours into them when i still need to play the likes of BioShock 2 and Heavy Rain. Still, if i change my mind, I will take your advice! |

Ah but the great thing about the Saturn is that those game of the replay type so you can play them in short bursts but they have the most value with repeated plays.

Sheesh, who in their right mind gets a Saturn for the sake of playing those? Now it's all about excellent ports of 2D arcade games, such as Battle Garegga, Sexy Parodius (and other Konami oldies), Sonic Wings Special, Elevator Action Returns (Taito Legends 2 version is quite broken in more ways than one) - those are genuine classics woth playing on Saturn.

P.S. Technically Sonic Wings Special isn't a port of any coin-op game (still, arguably the most accomplished Sonic Wings/Aero Fighters ever). -

Sega Rally, maybe. Racing games of today offer so much more that you really have to be a fan to want to master just four courses in three cars.
Nights on the other hand is a fabulous example of a score attack game. Driving/Racing games have continuously moved forward (along with FPS) where as the score attack model has been left behind.
Clearly there are a good few examples in recent years, buts its not the staple it once was.
That said, when I first saw the thread (yesterday, after the poll had ended) my initial thought was, "Top 3? With or without imports? Because thats apples to oranges." -
if you played it on the saturn, it would of counted! -

Registered 16 years agoOk I give in.
If I had to list my top 3 I would have to limit myself first off by some sort of exclusivity.
I am a huge fan of Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 2/3..... If I was really pushed to pick one it would be Alpha/Zero 2, but there is something pretty special about Zero 3 with the 4 meg cart. However I'd not put it in my (top 3) list since a few years ago PS2 gave us the loverly Street Fighter Alpha Anthology (which also contains Pocket Fighter - another gem (pun not intended)).
Other games I would ommit from consideration
Bust a Move 2 - I have a serious soft spot for that game.
Worms - Technically not the best version either, still up there for me though.
Duke Nukem 3D - Best console conversion, also contains Deathtank Zwei. A feature which almost makes it eligable under my self imposed limit.
Sonic Jam - If you dont have all three/four Soinc games on a MegaDrive, this is the second best option.
Daytona - I loved it to bits, dispite the awful port. But the Dreamcast rendition is the one to get. Japanese version, Daytona Circuit Edition, is probably the best Saturn version, but the handeling isn't quite as satisfying as the original port or arcade version.
My top 3
Guardian Heros, this is most certainly in my top 3. If any game from that era was begging for a XBLA/PSN release with online multiplayer it's this. The US or Japanese version tops the Pal version for 60hz support.... its a total no-go on the Pal version but its by no means a deal breaker.
Nights. I've thought about it quite a bit and at this moment in time it goes in the top 3. Its fluid, not scared of colour and the Midi tunes are also a joy. This does need to be played with the '3D" controller, technically possible with a standard pad but not worth it. Again US or Japanese version is preferable for the smoother 60hz ride.
Xmen vs Street Fighter. Not the best Capcom crossover game, but the first. Marvel vs Street Fighter is techically better and I believe better balanced, but for me Xmen just tops it. Only released in Japan and requires the 4meg cart, we have a more or less arcade perfect port.
Honorable mentions
Sega Rally
Panzer Dragoon 1/Zwei
Keio Flying Squadron 2
Marvel Vs Street Fighter
Virtua Fighter 2
Waku Waku 7
Samurai Showdown 3
Virtua Cop 2
Saturn Bomberman
That pretty much concludes my personal top 20ish Saturn games. Ones that I have the fondest memories of or still get the most enjoyment out of. There are still many classics that I'm yet to get my hands on.
It may not go unnoticed, there is a lack of Shmups. Im not the biggest fan in the world, so my collection is pretty much void of them. I know this is more or less a cardinal sin in the Saturn import scene :s
P.S. My profile picture has been the same for years

I've only really played the Sega Ages PS2 ports of Saturn games, but more votes is good right? They normally have two modes, an authentic Saturn mode and an alternate mode with the PS2 upscaling the graphics a bit.
1) Dragon Force
2) Panzer Dragoon
3) NiGHTS
Bonus) Virtua Fighter 2 (The first 3D fighting game I ever saw)
Hang on a sec... Did Dragon Force and Panzer Dragoon Saga get a PS2 release or am I getting muddled up here? -

Nothing wrong with playing old arcade racers either, but was Sega Rally on Saturn particulary great port? Has ANY really great port of a Sega Model 2 game ever graced Saturn?

As for NiGHTs, to me it felt like those 3D Sonic Games - pretty and fast, but the interaction wasn't great deal of fun for me. The PS2 remake is quite good by the way. As for Panzer Dragoon (the original, not Saga), on the PS2 it's pretty much the same as on the PC (and the PC port is playable under WinXP). It's got a new "rebalanced" mode, though. -

Sega Rally was lauded for being an amazing port and it really is that good. Daytona was also a excellent port if you consider the handling; I thought it was good graphically but suffered badly from clipping. Virtua Fighter 2 was also lauded and being a major VF fan at the time it was perfect.

I don't disagree, there is nothing wrong with playing old arcade racers. However getting a Saturn to play Sega Rally, with the understanding that its one of the best games on the console, you can see how someone would be disapointed upon learning what the package contains.
Upon initial boot you get 2 cars and 3 tracks. Within 20 minutes you will have seen most of the content the game has to offer. If you don't get sucked into mastering the courses and beating times the thought of Thats it? is going to creep in.
With reguards to really great ports of Model 2 arcade games on the Saturn. For the time, on the hardware; Virtua Cop, Virtua Cop 2, Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter 2. Alright ports (again for the time); Manx TT Superbike, Last Bronx, Virtual On (Virtual On is actually a pretty decent port but im not sure its quite up there with Virtua Cop 2 and Sega Rally).
How they hold up today is another matter. Still highly playable and there is an awful fun to be had. If any of the Saturn Model 2 ports was put up against the Arcade original DigitalFoundry style..... It wouldnt even be close. -

Registered 13 years agoVirtual-On is what renders me sceptical towards those ports. Apparently not just graphics are compromised in that one, but also the framerate got halved. Why did they even bother then? The PC port at least had 60 fps mode. -

Registered 17 years agoThere were inevitable compromises e.f. No 3d background in vf2 but they did not detract from the game IMHO. As a huge vf2 fan I was more than happy. Models in sr were not as good but still fantastic and a solid 30fps with perfect handling was what one wanted.
For those coming to the console and buying the best games especially ports need to realise that at the time a port meant a port so the bulk was the original game i.e. Not much additional content; nothing like the following generation or this one. -

Registered 14 years agoThe lack of love for Saturn Bomberman here is shocking. What is wrong with you people!?!?!?
Which other console allowed 10 player Bomberman (Which I spent one glorious evening playing with 9 of us) and utter chaos while doing so?
Every other game mentioned here I love too, especially Guardian Heroes! God, what a game. -
Been sorting out my collection today to sell most of it (I know I know, the Mrs is fed up of it taking up the entire garage). Was testing my Saturn's and decided to have a laugh and call the kids in to have a play, these two have been raised in the '360 generation so I wanted to see their expression when they saw the pixelated mess I grew up with.
Turns out they love it, they were fighting over Sega Rally all afternoon, even my trolling the pop-in and the crappy graphics didn't seem to dampen their enthusiasm.
Fighting vipers was a terrible port by the way compared to the cabinet version. -
Whatever happened to the guy who made it? He was a right knob.
What? -
Hehe sorry, couldn't resist!
