I genuinely do wonder if gay players come out to their team mates or it's a "don't ask don't tell" situation. Whoever they are, there is either a massive amount of respect for their privacy within the whole industry or they're keeping it ridiculously close to the chest.

On a practical level, gay footballers may have to be borderline celibate. Given the 24/7 media there's a fairly good chance they'd get found on a date/ app/ even using an escort. I'd actually wager it was easier to be a gay footballer, practically, years ago due to the relatively closed nature of the scene.

My feeling is that suggests there probably just isn't as many gay footballers in the professional game as we think - compared to general population stats. To get to that level, they'd have to have incredibly thick skin to tolerate fans, media and even owners (Man City) prejudices. Then you factor in the playground bullshit coming through academies. If we consider the amount of kids that drop out of the game by the time they're 16, being in an environment that already shits on you constantly for not being good enough, adding in the most homophobic voices of society isn't going to make you want to stay in the game. Which tells me the ones who HAVE stayed must be incredibly driven and very good footballers.

I think a fairly good indicator could be the proportion of fans at games (not just watching on TV) who are gay. Has a study been done on that?

Bit long-winded but I think it covers all the bases.

Yeah, I do think it's likely a lot of gay potential pros get scared off before they ever make it and that will again skew the figures.

Regardless of all that, as sad as it is that we have to have a big press conference about it in this day and age, hopefully it's a bit of a watershed moment and we can start getting into a place where players can feel more comfortable being open about things of this nature going forward.

As in most professional sports, there is a healthy (in this instance) us and them mentality and ethics which would mean a pro wouldn't talk about this to the media

I take the point, but I think considering how many singers, actors, politicians and general celebs are out compared to how many are likely gay, it’s obviously relatively easy to keep it under wraps.

The Bin Zayed Group released a statement yesterday to say they're still working diligently to get the deal pushed through apparently. At this point I'm pretty sure it's been Mike Ashley in a fancy dress sheikh costume the whole time.

Ashley would've such a prime target for the tabloid fake sheikh back in the day.

That takeover is 100% not happening.

It’s when Steve Bruce quits because it’s too much of a shit show you have to start to worry.

I've been hoping so for a few years now. Relegation and staying down are the only way we're getting rid of that lardcunt. Or a heart attack.
He's basically trolling the idiot fans now.

Danny Murphy suggesting he join Newcastle has been enough to scare Chris Wilder into signing a new deal.

All this talk of Steve Bruce has to have a link to his fine, literary career outside of football:

The cover alone is a complete WTF

They go for quite a bit of money now.

I'll have a look - First heard on the Reducer Podcast, where 2 Irish journalists take apart Football in books/films.

I love the front cover - whoever he's stood by, they've put a fake beard and hair on :)

There’s a blog somewhere where they’re all reviewed. Been posted here a few times. Probably funnier than the books themselves tbh.

It’s impossible not to read certain parts in the voice of Alan Partridge.

“Take Leddersford up, and you’ll be talk of the town,” the driver said. I smiled. That was a nice play on words. Talk of the town. Leddersford Town.”

Julie would need to get her act together offering coffee like that, making a show of herself.

the outing of Eddie Carberry as the killer, his stealing of a weapon from an army facility, his subsequent attempt at murdering Barnes with a sniper rifle AND the climactic game against Fulham which seals Leddersford’s promotion - all take place in the book’s last four pages

Haha. It's like when you'd do creative writing in high school, get really into it and then when your teacher said "pens down in two minutes" bring the story to a conclusion in the next 3 lines.

    Poor Newcastle. What a shitshow.
