54 games for club and country
    46 goals
    17 assists

    Decent.

Yeah Messi has the goals and assists stats to make it an easy decision.

Hard for a defender to match that really. Even with his not being dribbled past once stat.

3 players in the top 5, 4 in the top 10, love it!

Personally, 5 years after Messi is gone I don't think I'll miss him at all considering I rarely watch la liga... Also have little time for the way he and the otger top stars of la liga roll and roll on the floor. Much worse than the prem.

He is a phenomenal player as is Ronaldo, when they are gone they will both be missed. Both have a shout to be named GOAT as well.

    At club level
379 games 280 goals (53 in mls) 100 assists for Zlatan
    470 games 464 goals 128 assists Ronaldo

Stats totally back you up there pes.

It's not about the goals. Zlatan plays a different game to non-Zlatans

@SolidSCB I didn't call him a diver. He exaggerates fouls to get bookings. The way barca and real play that game is such bad sportsmanship.

Never liked Messi. Not really his fault, but at that Barca teams peak every other player was a cheating piece of shit. Good players though. But that kinda makes it even more horrible.

Exactly they are such talented players they don't need to be bellends. Deffo makes it worse.

@Frogofdoom I'm not saying liverpool don't have players making the most of fouls. They do. It isn't great but as long as refs don't give fouls like with Koulibaly ON Salah last week when he stayed on his feet. I understand why they drop like potatoes.

I am fairly sure however liverpool players in recent memory don't roll 5 times and pretend to cry. Klopp won't have it. He had a right go at Origi for lying down after a challenge last week. Get up and play is what Klopp wants.

I definitely think that when players on the team I support dive they probably have a valid reason for doing it while players on teams that I do not support are probably just cheaters when they do it.

Does Suarez not count as recent memory?

Are we talking about the same Messi that has been regularly commended over his career for riding out challenges, staying on his feet and playing to the advantage more than just about every other football player on the planet?

What a ridiculous hill to die on. Take a break from the Kool Aid for a bit.

@TheSaint I guess he does, but I was referring to us under Klopp.

Again not talking about whether a player was fouled. More about the cynical pretence that you have been steamrollered by a foul.

As for Messi's reputation I haven't actually heard him praised for that before now, I am going off what I have seen of him in champions league football and the small amount of real Madrid vs barca matches I have seen over the years. He isn't the worst, but considering he is the best player ever it does grate.

Messi isn't an angel but he's not Ronaldo when it comes to cheating. He's a relatively fair player.

On a completely different note, one of the football tropes I find most annoying is the need for managers/staff who ‘understand the club’.

This is a completely romanticised notion that is pretty much meaningless. Notice how it’s only ever used in the context of fans wanting managers that play attacking football. That’s all it really means.

Knowing the club makes a lot more sense way down the pyramid.

Although I would like to see a club embrace it meaning agricultural tackling, 60 yard hoofs and headers led with elbows at the top level

It comes from a regressive mentality. When you’re struggling to move forward the tendency is to look back to when things were working and try to replicate them somehow. But it doesn’t recognise wider macro change, and it’s a dangerous way to see things in business, life and football.
