Main thing I remember about playing was how awful the pitches were. You were constantly dodging dog shit or the massive craters in the pitch that meant the ball bounced all over the shop.

My youth team (age 8- 12) league played on fucking gravel..... Brutal so it was. All the cuts on our knees you'd have thought our coach was having his way with us.

We won pretty much everything though, and for cup finals we had the privilege to play on grass!. I was second highest scored from center mid.

Jesus me and my mates were just talking about our local gravel pitch the other day. I never played organised football on it but we used to play like 7 - 9 aside on a local one. And we paid for the pleasure.

It was a death trap because we did this as relative adults and one of the boundaries was somewhat damaged so if you caught a shoulder over there you were in genuine peril.

It's not that long ago really but now there are high quality 3 and 4G pitches everywhere and you wouldn't even think of playing on a concrete pitch (it's now a car park thankfully).

Loved playing football as a kid but I was really awful at it.

Could have been so much better with some proper coaching, just basically got none at all at school.

Literally spent years perfecting my volley after that Tony Yeboah goal. I'd say today I could crack a pretty decent volley on both left/right foot.

Used to practice my left foot all the time out in the street kicking it into our driveway. Still pretty handy with it.

Aye. Coupled with the fitness of Steve Bruce.

Playing with a tennis ball at school on the concrete was great for honing touch and control.

Yes. And completely destroying your shoes.

I always hated the astroturf that had what I can only describe as simulated mud in the form of tiny black rubber pellets laying on the bottom of the bed.

Fuck wearing shorts on that if you're planning on being a keeper or going near a slide tackle. The friction immediately started melting the little bits of rubber into your skin. Horrible stuff.

3G/4G pitches. I love playing on them. Usually a much nicer surface than shitty Sunday league surfaces. But they are horrendous to slide tackle on or dive as a goalie, yeah

Also end up with 100s of black bobbles in your socks/trainers which are a PITA to knock out.

    That's the good stuff.

On the left foot right foot stuff, I'm pretty balanced, ingrown toenail on my right foot forced me to play mostly left footed for almost a year. Great way to learn.

Astro burns were horrible, especially when your skin fused with the bed sheets which you'd have to peel off in the morning.

The thing about those burns, very easy to spot the slidy prick as they invariably wear tights or full length trackies.

Yeah lovely if you are staying on your feet, horrible if you value the skin on your legs and want to put a tackle in.

I went all 1990's goalie and took to playing in trackies eventually.

There was something satisfying about being on one of those shitty Sunday League pitches in the pissing rain though. You could start a slide tackle from practically the halfway line and end up catching them on the edge of the 18 yard box on some days. Everyone slipping all over the shop and suffering were some of my favourite games ever.

I'm not worried about sliding on 3G or astro tbh, though it's much better in rain. Probably the youth experience of playing on gravel made me used to ending a game with burns and blood pishing down my leg. I'm bound to be riddled with arthritis because of other sports when I'm older anyway so fuck it.

One time playing on 3G was particularly nasty as the pitch was frozen with big chunks of ice all over the place.

Even worse are the old style hockey sand astro. Now that is painful in the cold, incredibly hard and will rip your skin up.

Only ever twice pulled a hamstring, once on indoor wooden court and the other was on that hockey style astro. Awful stuff.

Oh god the sand stuff. Yeah that was bottom of the barrel, probably left half my kneecaps on that stuff.

In Germany and Holland the kids of the military families were allowed to enter a team in their leagues. Every time we'd play away they would get us to play on red Ash pitches, they were basically full of gravel and would cause so many injuries.

Your eyes would water the whole game too from all the dust kicked up.

I used to play a lot on sand based astro too. Shocking to play on in the rain. Ball flies at crazy speed so you need to be tiki taka it, and you'll be on your hole if you don't have decent shoes.
