It was always going to be different. I enjoyed it but nowhere near as much as Distant worlds. Cosplay wise there was some but not a great deal. The Chocobo girl was there from DW last year which is one of the best cosplays i've ever seen |

Registered 15 years agoCosplay was a bit lacking at this one. Have to say this was different to distant worlds. Felt there was less of the pazazz and more musical merit but not sure if it was me, but the orchestra didn't seem to pull off the music overly well all the time. Still the arrangements were interesting. And I've officially run out of merchandise for any more autographs! -

Registered 12 years agoI'm broadly in agreement with you both; DW was better, but I still enjoyed FS. I do think they messed about with the music a little too much - plenty of places where you'll get a bar and a half of something before it flies off into something else meant that it was difficult to get into. When it settled into something, like the couple of minutes of Terra's Theme towards the end of the VI movement, or the similar OWA passage in VII, it was fantastic.
EDIT: Also, I meant to say that I think the lack of a choir and big screen hurt the atmosphere a little.
As for cosplay, there wasn't much; a young girl dressed as a chocobo (might've been the same one from last year's DW), a Rinoa, the odd Cloud or SeeD uniform Squall.
I got my VII OST signed by Uematsu and my XIII OST signed my Hamauzu

Registered 12 years ago@Mageme I was just thinking this morning that I could've taken The Last Story, to be a bit different
Haha already thinking ahead? I'm guessing if there was another DW this year we'd have heard about it already.
EDIT Also, here's a pic of the stuff I got signed.gif)

Did your brother (it was your brother, wasn't it?) get to keep any sheet music? That'd be pretty cool. -

@Mageme I love that steelbook! TLS limited ed? I have that too, it's a really nice set.
I'll share one more pic, my signed FFXIII stuff.
FFXIII Limited Ed signed by Yoshinori Kitase and Isamu Kamikokuryo, FFXIII-2 Limited Ed signed by Ali Hillis, and then the OST I got signed yesterday. Now I just need my Limited Ed XIII-2 OST signed by someone and that's the lot... until Lightning Returns comes out /o\ -

Registered 8 years agoI expected that it was going to be like Distant Worlds and wondered why there were two separate concerts but the Q&A before the concert made me realise that I was in for something entirely different! the composers spoke about how they were telling the story with the music and I knew at that point that it would not be the music in individual pieces like I was used to! each section was one long piece and the themes danced in and out of each other as various parts of the story unfolded. In his own words, the arranger of FFVI piece said about how Terra's theme at the beginning would give you the impression that she was being controlled, and that Kefka would become more and more mad and dangerous as the piece progressed and sure enough you felt it in the concert. but perhaps the most tense moment was to come, you see, I have not played VI much and do not yet fully know the story! (spoilers ahead) having revealed to us that Terra herself was half Esper and that Kefka was absorbing the powers from Espers, the question of what would happen to Terra when they destroyed Kefka and rid the world of magic arose. he said at this point that the music of the concert would reveal the end so as a sudden silence followed what was clearly the big boss fight with Kefka, a sad sounding piece began to play and I knew despite not playing the story yet that Terra's fate must have seemed hopeless at some point, was she dead? it certainly sounded that way, but then the piece began to have a glimmer of hope before building up, almost as if someone coming back from the edge of death itself and the happiness and relief was clearly heard in the piece....utterly astounding!!
also one of the highlights for me was hearing Aerith's theme battling out with Sephiroth's for the fate of the world! I've never heard anything like it before!! as I said, I have really only heard the themes played separately but the two pieces dueling really gave you a sense of wondering who would win. Would Sephiroth succeed in his plan to destroy the planet? or would the power of Holy come through at the end?
one thing was missing for me though and this won't surprise anyone...CHOCOBO THEME??!! would have made an awesome Encore methinks but perhaps I'm biased.gif)
P.S if anyone has pics of chocobo girl, I'd very much like a copy if that's ok please -

I don't have any pics though, I'm afraid.
That's a nice way of looking at the movements. I would've liked to have attended the pre-concert talk, but I was still queuing for the signing so I missed it. I think I've just listened to so much of the music so many times that it's difficult to hear anything but what I'm used to; every time it settled into a piece I liked, I was thinking "Ah yeah, I love this!" and then it moved off somewhere else. I felt a little unsatisfied by some of it.
I still enjoyed it, but I really think it would have benefited from a screen showing pertinent moments from the games during each movement - all there was to stare at was the orchestra, which meant I then spent time searching out specific musicians every time I heard a unique sound, taking me out of the music. -

He gets to do all sorts of entertaining stuff... he actually said he was on the soundtrack to an upcoming game, except I have no idea what it is. Alien War Z or something... except I scanned through all of EG's release dates and news articles and couldn't see a thing about it!
Said he enjoyed doing the FF concert, enjoyed the themes and noted that there were tears in the audience at Aerith's theme. -

Registered 8 years agoI really enjoyed FS! I havn't played X or VI yet but I could still appreciate the music outside of the context of the game, I felt. My favourite part was VII as its the one I'm most familar with out of the three. Was awesome hearing Cid's theme (our friend really enjoyed that as a Cid cosplayer!) and the battle theme in particular. I got the pamphlet signed*, my brother got the VII soundtrack and our friend his FF playing cards and his Tonberry plush
