Don't think it's possible which pisses me off because it drains battery life. It helps the camera focus quicker I suppose but it's still annoying. Let me know if you find out how! |

Registered 17 years agoI just looked into this and it's working as intended apparently which not good. I never noticed because due to the brightness hunt that occurs when the camera returns from standby I started just switching the camera off between shots. -
Yeah I noticed the brightness thing when it comes back from sleep, took a couple of really over exposed images before I realised what was happening. The hunting focus isn't the worst thing in the world but they should have included an option to turn it off really. -

Registered 14 years agoIs there anything other than a DSLR that can achieve good DOF? -

Registered 20 years agoAnything medium format?
But seriously (assuming you're not made of money), you need a wide aperture to get decently selective DoF, and since apertures are measured as a fraction of the focal length, you need a big focal length to get a big aperture. Anything with a sensor significantly smaller than a DSLR won't be able to use lenses that are very long, because as the sensor gets smaller, the crop factor increases and medium lenses become extreme telephoto. -

Well the NEX series and the X100 both have decent sized sensors and you'll be able to get a good DoF out of them. -

The same size as most DSLRs actually, so yes the same DOF capabilities, assuming you're able to use the same apertures of course.

Registered 12 years agoI'm not a fan of m4/3 these days but the 20mm 1.7 and 45 1.8 surprised me on the DoF front when I had them. -

Registered 20 years agoRather tasty sounding this new Sony RX-100. Nice big sensor, decently bright lens, decent sounding control, flash, still pocketable. Downsides: less bright at length, some control niggles and the lens is a bit soft at the edges, even stopped down - but to be honest, I don't think I have any need for 20MP. I can scale it down at least 2x or even crop the middle 10MP. Not brilliant DoF of course with that lens spec, but better than almost anything in it's class (save an XZ-1 at 100mm possibly, but I haven't done the maths).
DPreview have an RX-100 preview with sample shots up. -

Registered 17 years agoI'm still having this eternal dilemma. Went for a TZ-10 around this time last year, but it's shit. I want something that will fit in my pocket (else I might as well just take the SLR out), which effectively eliminates the XZ-1 and G12, but doubt the S100 will deliver indoors without a flash. Bah humbug and all that. -

Registered 17 years agoOh. Then I came here and saw the RX100. I guess that answers that one. -

Registered 17 years agoLooked through that preview, does look very lovely. Pictures are sharp, indoor ones look sharp with little noise. Only criticism is the colours look a little flat to me. -
Pretty cool compact, I was sort of eyeing Nikon 1 because of the AF speed. It's still quite expensive for me, as I already have a "backup" to the DSLR (the NEX-5N).
Nice to see where the compact mirrorless cameras are going, sensor development is very impressive! -
So, have we discussed the Leica X2 in here yet?
Stupidly expensive of course, but its fixed all the issues with the X1 and as such is now the thing I most want in the world.

Registered 13 years agoSo that's basically an X100 with a slower lens, lower res LCD and nearly 3 times the price?

Indeed, it's what Leica should be making themselves. The EVF is the Olympus one at more than double the price too.

Registered 12 years agoWhat is it and Leica and 2005 spec 230k dot screens? It's pathetic. Even that B&W only new M has one! -
I think they somewhat laughably claim it's to keep the unit costs down. -
Hello all
Can anyone recommend a decent waterproof compact I can take kayaking? I've had a quick google and it looks like people like the Panasonic Lumix most. Does anyone have any experience with it or any other waterproof camera?
Cheers

Registered 13 years agoMy folks are after a digital camera for around £50 and I haven't really got any recommendations since I only bother with analogue cameras. Are there any particular models that stand out or for £50 is there not much to choose between them? -

It's getting incredibly positive feedback everywhere. Don't know about DOF, that vid at the top of the link looks amazing (even if it's probably shot at the minimal focusing distance):

I'd consider picking one up however, NEX-6 (baby NEX-7) and 3rd gen NEX-5 are on their way.... -

Registered 14 years agoPicked up one of these today for the bargain price of £99.95! These were around £250 when released.
Main reasons for the purchase: USB charging, 18x optical zoom, full HD recording, some manual control and supposed to be good in low light. Solid reviews in most places.

Due to *ahem* budgetary concerns, I have recently sold all of my kit and used some of the money to buy an RX100.
Hopefully be here by the end of the week so I'll throw some first impressions up here. Pretty excited tbh. -
Otto has one and says it's incredible.
