Registered 11 years agomy favs are ghouls n ghosts, ninja gaiden the ninja and castle of illusion -
Ninja gaiden on the Master System was in my opinion far superior to the nes versions. Still highly enjoyable -
Ninja Gaiden , you know you want to!
Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, do it for old times sake!
EDIT: If the gouls link doesn't work, click on ninja gaiden, go to bottom of the page and choose the master system. Then click on more games and then just find it in the list.

Was playing Golvellius recently. Still a great game. -

Registered 17 years agoPlayed through the first two Sonic games on MS recently. They really don't hold up next to the MD versions. Also whoever designed the level on Sonic 2 with the pipe maze needs to be taken out back and shot. Still going to play through Chaos soon, for reasons unknown. -
Moved to a Master System (Master System 2 model) after the Sinclair Spectrum. Lot of fond memories of some not very good games (and a few decent ones).
Alex Kidd in Miracle World was built in, of course. The Master System Sonic games were pretty cool, at least the 1st too. Vastly different to the Megadrive versions and arguably harder. Some pretty cool ideas in Sonic 2, like the hand gliders, or using a bubble underwater to move around.
Asterix has already been mentioned, and that was a great platformer, but didn't see The Lucky Dime Caper (starring Donald Duck) mentioned, which was superb.
Might have to dig an emulator out. -

Very happy memories playing games with my big brother. Strangely, I have very vivid memories of playing Moonwalker, naturally as 80s kid we were all big Jacko fans! Sonic goes without saying, and Castle of Illusion.
Anyone remember the crappy snail maze game hidden in the bios?? We gave that far more time than we should have... -
Phantasy Star
Ys
Wonderboy III
Also Rans:
Rtype
Zillion II
Powerstrike -
Fond nemories of my Master System 2 even though I could have got a Megadrive that xmas instead if I'd asked for it. That was the year my Dad left my Mum for a younger model and he was guilt buying.
As I was pretty young I wasn't so bothered by the power difference and I can loads of fun with the little system. Alex Kidd built in! My mates over the road had the Snail variation.
Loved Sonic 1 and 2 though was disappointed you couldn't play as Tails until Chaos. Mortal Kombat sans Kano blew me away too.
It was Asterix that I remember most vividly though. I had to have a lot of dental work at the time and I used to suck my thumb. If I continued to do so I'd nullify the work done to my teeth so my Mum bribed me with a MS game to stop.
My gaming addiction won out immediately and Asterix was mine!
Upgraded to a Snes a few years later and never looked back. -

Registered 16 years agoI remember being amazed how it looked after owning an Atari 2600, same when I upgraded from the MS to Mega Drive a few years later. Loved a bit of Alex Kidd, especially the one on the console itself. -
Golden Axe Warrior. Found it better than Zelda. Also the MS seemed to be technically superior to the NES to me, with more colourful graphics and less stuttering/flickering.

Registered 14 years agoNES all the way for me. It must have been great to have had a Master System when it was relevant, but with hindsight a LOT of its library became available for the Megadrive in superior form. Nothing wrong with that; they were mostly all first party arcade games so of course Sega were going to create MD ports when it came out, but NES had a ton of third party exclusives giving it greater historical relevancy IMO.
Also while it's technically superior I'm not a fan of its colour palette personally. -

Registered 16 years agoThe Master System had a secret built in game didn't it?
If you lived in Europe it was no contest, barely anybody owned an NES so barely any shops stocked games, the Master System at least had a bit more high street presence.
If you take into account releases released internationally the Master System library is a bit more respectable, but of course nowhere near the breadth and quantity of the NES.
Still, you've got some pretty interesting games and some decent arcade ports such as a very respectable version of R-Type. Though it's very telling that certain franchises just didn't appear from certain publishers. Nintendo really had the console industry in a death grip forcing publishers to give them exclusivity in exchange for access to their platform. Nintendo really did hold the Master system back. -
Yeah it had the snail game built in, but that was only built in to the original MS console. The newer version featured Alex Kidd built in which was pretty good for the time but had that shitty paper scissor stones boss battle. -

Registered 5 years agoMy memory of the master system goes back to when I was four years old and my parents bought me one. For a child, tbe game Psychic World was good. It had a surreal edge to it. It's actually a port of the larger more complete msx version. But anyway, try playing it without the special powers and see how far you get. -
Any recommendations for the master system? Is Golden Axe Warrior any good? -

Master System was my first gaming system, had the 2nd version with Alex Kidd built in. Many great memories including hang gliding in Sonic 2 and throwing shurikens in the Shinobi end of level stages. -

Registered 3 years agoPlaying the Master System Sonic 1, loved that game, still do. It was the first console game I ever completed back in 1991 since Atari 2600 games can't really be completed.
Completing that game got me more into gaming despite my having been a gamer since 1984/1985, I didn't game much before then though.

Master system was great but the pads felt like they were made from cardboard. -
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Spiderman
Chase Hq
Wonder Boy in Monster Land - this game is hard as fuck if your playing without save scumming on an emulator
Pacman - the 3D one when you can jump
Master of Darkness
Phantasy Star
Miracle Warrior -

Registered 5 years agoIt's not Zelda NES good, but it'll scratch that gaming itch quite nicely if you have the patience.
I had a soft spot for MERCS. Not an all-time classic, but any enjoyable time waster. The Ninja was another I remember fondly, though it requires you to figure out why the games loops back around to the start, rather than triggering the final level.
To be honest though, as mentioned above, nearly all of the Master System's Best games were re-released for the Mega Drive. Xenon 2, Galaxy Force, Alien 3, Gauntlet, etc... -
Our first proper console, having been soley a Speccy family in my early childhood. Sonic 1 was the life changer for me... that realisation as a kid of what was possible.
