Someone posted this in the comments section of the free/browser MMO article that went up on EG a couple of weeks back (credit to that guy... but I don't want to go back to find it!)

I've found it a neat little time waster at work, might be of interest to others :-)

    Die2Nite

You're grouped with 40 randoms (you can set up a group of 5, I think) to try to help keep your town alive for as long as possible. Build up defences/structures, scavenge for resources, etc etc.

I'm not usually that interested in these sort of things, but I think I've just watched too many zombie films recently!

I am horribly addicted to this game. The framewrok of town survival by building and scavenging is interesting, but more so is how the players react to the town's imminent death (you will always die). Panic, backstabbing and selfishness! Or altruism, dedication and focus.

It allows for various styles of play, from visiting once a day to monitoring it throughout the day. Just make sure you're inside before 2200GMT every day and read the town forum, you should do OK.

Haha yeah the amount of dodgy stuff going and back stabbing is great. Always suspicion in the air when considering peoples actions. For game that has very little graphics I've been part of some tense rescues of people from the desert.

Whilst most MMO's (I've played at least) you can ignore other people and solo this is reliant on team work (or prior mentioned backstabbing if so inclined) to progress and survive.

A great game. One minus point I'd mention is that the paid extras are tad overpriced (hasn't stopped me) but it's entirely playable for free so can't complain.

Oh yeah, and please put Reko as your sponsor if you do sign up.

Just means that if you do get the bug and upgrade to the paid version, I get a few free paid days :)

Season One has just kicked off good and proper - new town and user leaderboards implemented amongst other things.

Never a better time to try it out

Good stuff. We're on day 8 and we've got a massive spike of zombies (over 300 from y/day) due in tonight's attack so hammering the construction away, gonna be a close one if we make it IMO.

Well we did it 80 defence passed the mark using Defence Focus :)

We've found bunch of nuts n bolts to get the hacksaw fixed so construction should be flying away now.

    Lucky you.

My town is sufferring from a vicious case of Crazy Anonymous Builders (tm) - those that do not read the forums and just click on building whatever they can.

Day 2 - no workshop but the CABs have built armour plating, and great wall strengthening already. I'm expecting them to have built Barbs and Great Pit by the time I get back from scavenging at this rate!

Yeah we still get the random outbreak of Crazy Anonymous Builders (tm) - items have to be pulled from the bank regularly to stop random stuff being constructed.

You really know if its a bad case of Crazy Anonymous Builders (tm) when the catapult is one of the first things to appear :)

I'm in a town trying to get top rank in Season 1 - the same guy that did the above diary is in this town too: the start

Current record is day 30 - with about 37 of 40 players reaching day 29. Hard to beat.

This sounds amazing but I can't seem to find out what it actually is. Been surfing around trying to find a screenshot or anything. Is this actually a flash game, or is it kind of like Championship Manager to zombies? Do you just look at the map screen?

The dynamics are indeed more like CM with zombies.

Try w00t's link two posts above yours if you want to get an idea of gamplay, after a couple of them diary entries you should get a fairly good notion.

Right, thanks - sorry not sure how I missed that.

This does sound amazing on paper but that sort of thing isn't for me. I'd love to see a zombie MMO set in a city or something where you could build your own towns. Basically this, with a graphics engine, how great would that be?!

OK, giving this a try. On my third incarnation. Quite like these browser games where you have to check in a few times a day. Neptunes Pride is worth a look also.

Current town (Dead Roads of Rabbits) will survive to day 28 tonight - we're very hopeful of hitting day 29 at least to get a top 10 entry for Season 1 :D

Should finish just in time for Season 2.

    Season Two is here:)

w00t; are you making jump into a new town? My town is still alive and kicking (probably not for long) so no season two goodness for me just yet.

    Soon.

Just forming the meta-coalition... seeing if Talenos will be joining us again.

Last town made it to 6th place in Season 1 - one of only 3 towns to make it to day 30. Got a fancy distinction for our efforts :)

Edit: Managed to beat a few maximum defence records along the way and set a new record for defensive objects - 303 in the bank on day 30 :)

Almost built the castle house upgrade too...

Other than the coalition I roll with I still prefer the random element of strangers than uber organised meta-play. Having the possibility of a griefer or three keeps you on your toes. Never a dull moment :)

There is a process of going through multiple towns that will die on days 2-4.

Key points - read the forums, read the wiki and ask knowlegable players for advice. Or just fuck about getting to learn the system and so on :)

The towns that make it to the end are very strictly run, which may not be your thing (I do miss the carnage of non-organised towns).

PS - day 6 in the Abandonned Graveyard of Dogs - 70 defensive objects and one death so far...

Edit: Latest video from our town

There's already slight arguing on our fourms. A hero (who probably knows what he's doing) is advising us what to gather and build but he's basically being ignored or slandered.

I guess we'll be dead soon enough.

If they are saying "BUILD THE FUCKING WORKSHOP!!!", then they have a fair idea :)

I have not seen a town without a workshop survive for more than 4 days.

I also have not seen a town with at least 15 players going out daily to scavenge live past about 8 days.

Zombies mode in Black Ops is basically that for up to players but you're right, a game like that on a bigger scale would be great.
