I live in Brisbane and was evacuated from my work in the city around lunchtime.

It's quite a scary time here and it's only going to get worse in the next 24-36 hours.

I saw it on the news this morning. It's quite terrifying seeing cars being swept away like they were toys.

Hope everything does ok for for JBloke.

Thanks beastmaster. The worst of it will hit Brisbane late tomorrow and into Thursday I believe.

Worrying times for us all here. Was putting sandbags outside the office where I work this morning before going home.

Definitely won't be going out tomorrow. Time to hope for the best.

Shit. Friends just flew back to Brisbane a couple of days ago. Good luck JBlokeUK.

Disappointing lack of opportunistic surfing going on - totally ruining my racial stereotype of Australians

Seriously though, pretty mental disaster type thing. Hope everyone down in Oz is staying safe as they can :(

I like the fact that one guy got out there and saved his 4x4. Iwould have been the same and gone to save my car...

I was in the City yesterday as well, managed to get out on the last train three stops short of home. Annoyingly it terminated in a suburb being warned as going to be one of the worst hit and everyone was evacuating. I made my way over to the shopping centre where a few other stranded people were congregating. All the shops were shut and there were a few injured people so I had images of Dawn of the Dead going through my mind.

Managed to get home on the last road remaining open but now I think we are totally cut off North, South and West (there might be one road open East but not sure). Luckily our house is on relatively high ground so we are safe here.

I feel bad for the people less lucky.

These were my thoughts too!! Give em back!

A family I know are out there. Heard this morning they got the text to evacuate. That's when it hit home for me. All seems to be ok, they've gone to high ground, but it really is mental. In the BBC video when that car gets popped out from under that bridge you realise the power of that water!

    Thanks mate.

Just drove my wife into work in the city and they've told her to stay until further notice, so will have to go back in and get her, hopefully before 2pm our time, which is when the river is expected to peak.

This afternoon the centre of Brisbane will be under. The roads are dead and the TV footage is just heartbreaking.

I do feel for Australians with this, as it seems hugely destructive; there is an upside though, potentially:

Seems like the devastating drought is over in South East Queensland. Queensland makes absolutely no sense as an area ot live as it essentially is a desert, and is barely serviced by a bit of the Murray-Darling system.

Amazingly, the place will now be much more viable; the entire state of Queensland was in drought by the end of 2010 - 100% of it (70% at beginning of 2010). While Australia might be an insane place to live for the most part, Queensland is an entire anomaly as it is totally unsuited for habitation in the long term.

This is like a flood on Mars, basically.

That's true, the majority of QLD is uninhabited. There is still a lot of fertile farming land around and one of the main industries is mining.

Not sure if these floods will do much good for QLDs long term water needs. The reservoirs are full now but if another 10 year drought follows then they won't stay full for long.

This will be a shit year for farmers. it's one extreme to another.

Saw some reporting on the evacuation of Brisbane on the news. The footage is fucking mental.

Good luck JBloke. I hope your PS3 doesn't get drowned otherwise we'll be seeing you over in the funfair that is the depression thread ;)

Judging by how your town is still growing I take it you're not at risk of flooding?

I am on a hill, in a safe state, more at risk of bush-fires.

Awful times in the flooded areas though, heartbreaking.

Luckily where I live won't be affected, but my wife is working in the city currently and an area just down the road is currently being evacuated.

Looks like I'm going to have to drive into the city shortly to pick her up. And the water hasn't even peaked yet!!

I'm just thinking that the smart ones will be putting nets out the side of their houses for free shrimp and BBQ wood.

It's raining here in Melbourne, but as far as I know we've never had floods. Australia being the gigantic place that it is, I'm probably just as far removed from this as Euro people are.

My heart goes out to Queenslanders, though. 75% of the state is now a disaster zone. I can't imagine what it must be like to lose your house.

It always rains in Melbourne! And it's cold in winter. You never told us that on Neighbours did you?

I too wish all our Australian friends well. Stay safe and if the water comes close, get the hell out of dodge. Better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah, Neighbors does lie a bit. To be fair, though, you have Summer Bay to refer to as well. ie. in NSW and Queensland, it is perfect beach weather, all day, every day*

    * Except when there's a cyclone, flood, drought, earthquake, bushfire, hail storm, dust storm, bomb scare, serial killer on the loose, dingo attack, shark attack, crocodile attack, spider attack, rape attack

Or worse still, a spider-rape attack.

    Or the rape-rape attack.

    The list could go on.
