I'm thinking about getting a Wii for my 5 year old son, at the moment we're playing on a PS2 where some of his favourite games are Katamari and Midnight Club 2. He doesn't seem that interested in typical kids games (I picked up a few, like Madagascar and Tom and Jerry, which he quickly lost interest in.)

I'm wondering if there are any equivalent games to the ones I mentioned on Wii?

There's fairly slim pickings for that kind of thing on Wii, especially for a younger gamer as that discounts Scarface and The Godfather.

The only one I can think of is Need for Speed Carbon. I think there are more in the series that are also open world too. It's a bit old now and not great, by it's alright and cheap.

I'll have a look. It doesn't have to be great, as long as there is a choice of a few cars, and a fairly interesting city.

The munchables is similar to Katamari. But instead of rolling things, you eat things.

I think you should get an Xbox360 and then just select the games he gets carefully.

My 5 year old is a 'gamer', but doesn't like kiddie games. He plays Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on my Xbox 360. And he likes it when I have driving games, too.
He was a Wii, but the only games he likes on that are Just Dance 1 and 2 and Mario Kart.

I'd say an Xbox 360 would be a better bet. More choice of games that he likes as there's plenty of Need For Speed games, plus Midnight Club and there are a lot of very decent XBL Arcade games for download.
The new 4gb slim Xbox 360 is a decent priced alternative to a Wii. Although if you're going to download a lot of games, I'd suggest splashing out on a bigger 250gb one. (Plus you can install all your games on a 250gn Slim to make the 360 silent) Or even go for the 4gb Kinect version, its a step up from the Wii and great active fun for kids.
You'll just have to research what games are suitable, or ask the guys here.

the Xbox with Kinect is still around £80 more. It's his mum who wants to get him a Wii, I would just have continued with the PS2 :)

It's not like you need the Kinect.* I'm sure he can use the Xbox360 pad just as well as a PS2 pad. :)

*I don't think anyone needs it, really.

Maybe not Kinect then. But the 4GB Xbox is just as cheap as a Wii now. It depends on what's available for the Wii, and what's available for the 360. Its the games you should go for, not just the system.

My kid turns 5 this february, and he absolutely loves Super Mario Galaxy. I'm thinking of getting Galaxy 2 just for him. He also liked Outrun 2 (from the Playstation Store), Wall-E on the PS2, Burnout Paradise (PS3), Crash Bandicoot series, New Super Mario Bros. and Spider-Man 2 (PS2). He also loves Toy Story (PSP).

I think your kid could enjoy typical kids games if you choose the right ones. It also helps if he's a big fan of a franchise - my kid just loves Cars, Shrek, Wall-E and Toy Story, so he also loves the games, apart from Shrek which quite frankly isn't very good. It also helps if the games are reasonably open-world, maybe pure platforming/racing.

Oh, and he loves the old Sonic and Mario games as well, from the Wii VC.

So I went ahead and got him the Wii with Sonic Colors (no bundles with Galaxy) I think I'll pick up some games from VC and then take it from there. If everything else fails we'll still have the PS2:)

I recommend de Blob if you can find it. It's a semi-open world platformer.

Don't forget New Super Mario Bros Wii and DKC: Returns.

Possibly not Madworld or No More Heroes, unless you want to corrupt him.

TrackMania has a level editor if that'd be of interest.
