I got my Wii out again after not having used it for about a year, and the console no longer recognised the remotes. Does this just happen then if you don't use it for ages?

Not AFAIK. You could try to sync it again. There is a sync button where you insert the batteries.

Yeah I resynched them and they seemed to work, not tried my Wii again since then so it'll be interesting to see whether they'll still be synched.

I have, however, just remembered that I took them to a party a while ago to play Mario Kart - I didn't see how they synched the remotes to my friend's wii but perhaps whoever did it used the permanent synch method as opposed to one time only. Yeah maybe that's what's happened!

It shouldn't do that, but they are easy enough to resync.

Sounds like you answered your own question!

Click the red button near the batteries and it should sync up again.

For future ref, we have a blog on this with images on how to complete the sync process - the standard way: http://hitaritrade.blogspot.com/2011/01/synchronizing-wii-remote-with-wii.html
