Registered 16 years agoSo anyone else heading for the fine city of Glasgow tomorrow? I'm quite looking forward to it, mostly hoping that my boundless enthusiasm isn't killed by it. I'm going at 4pm. -

Registered 14 years agoWell, I went to the Bristol showing today; wish I'd read about the Street Fighter/RE things beforehand because I was just stood there cringing all the way through, was then blinded by the torch wielded by the Claire Redfield cosplayer and smacked my leg on a box, almost falling over the wooden fence they'd set up. Pre-warned I would have just told them to let me go around and up the stairs to the next area.
Anyway, the 3D definitely works alright, though have to agree it starts to come apart if you hold it too far away from your face (might be a problem for me, as I sometimes hold my DS at pretty much arms length). Got to play on Steel Diver, Pilotwings Resort and then spotted they had Zelda OoT, but only got about 30 seconds on that before they said to move to the next area; I was really hoping to have a go on Shadow War (I think that's the one, the Tom Clancy turn based game), but couldn't find any display signs for it. Quite enjoyed Steel Diver, though I've got so used to using a capacitive touch screen on my Palm Pre I'd forgotten how hard I had to press to make the DS screen respond to my finger and didn't see the stylus anywhere; even so, I played the tutorial and the first mission, managing to knock 30 seconds off the previous best time saved on it.
Had a quick go on one of the Altered Reality games, could see that being fun if they expanded it beyond a shooting game, could easily see some kind of RPG using a series of mini locations. Can just imagine panning around a location looking for triggers/switches in a puzzle, running your character around to get to them, and if it's outdoor locations you could have birds flying through the air and animals running through the area. -
Neither tom clancy game was at the Amsterdam event, don't think Ubi have been demoing them (or telling us anything about them even though they are both out in a few weeks) anywhere.
shame, Shadow war could be a nice launch title (but with low mass market appeal being a TB strategy game that's not Advance wars) -

I think there was a 3 second snippet in the preview video they showed before we went in, came and went so quickly I didn't even have time to read the game title! -

Registered 17 years agoWent to the one in the Weege on saturday, was slightly disappointed to be bumped from my desired slot to the 4.15 showing, and it seemed like anyone could just turn up, also didn't seem that well organised.
Anyway, streetfighter bit :- cringeworthy, especially getting photos afterwards.
Resident evil bit :- seemed a bit pointless, but Claire was hot and I got to touch her shoulder.
3ds bit :- The 3d is impressive but a bit gimicky. All of the 3d-ness was into the screen, although I think the size of the screen limits the extent to which something can pop out.
was like looking into a small box 10cm X 10cmX 10cm, but quite nice to see it without glasses.
I do get the feeling that the 3d novelty would wear off quite quickly, the screen is just not big enough for 3d to be immersive. It also seemed like a pointless add on for the 2d side scrolling games on show.
Zelda and Resident evil were the best of the games that I played, although in resi I was too busy trying not to be eaten to really examine the 3d effects.
The alternate reality stuff was quite cool, but not all that innovative (there have been similar things in the metro).
the 3d camera was bit poor really. Not sure if it was the lighting, but the resulting images were blurry.
My general impression is that it offers a slight improvement on the DS, but with a 3D gimmick. I'm not sure if it worth twice the price of a DS, especially if you already own one. I may pick one up if I find a cheap one in the US, but I don't think I'll be going crazy for it at launch over here.
The booth babes were hot though. -

Registered 12 years agoWent to the 11am slot in Glasgow yesterday. Awkward shuffling around fat guys trying not to get caught looking at the hired models with pornstar heels on. Street Fighter bit was ultra naff but somehow brilliant. Photos hilarious.
3ds: sign me up, I loved it. I don't know if that makes me an easily convinced idiot or not, but from my very first glimpse of Kokiri Forest (that place I used to run around back when I was 12) with the 3d slider turned upto 11 was enough to get me hooked. Flying in kid Icarus was beautiful. Street Fighter was exceptional. Dead or Alive made me feel all funny inside, and Ridge Racer was aaaaamazing. It's going to be an exensive year

Registered 17 years agoI'm not saying I didn't enjoy it,
If it were £50 cheaper then I reckon I'd buy it without hesitation.
But I think the 3d is a bit gimmicky, and after trying to play super monkey ball with tilt and 3D on, I'm wondering how annoying is going to be to try and keep the the handheld in the correct position on a bus/tube/train/plane/powerplate.
I was wearing a tan coloured jacket. -

Registered 16 years agoI didn't mean to imply I didn't think you enjoyed it, it's clear you did. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that .gif)
I was just really positive about it. Everything I was concerned about was addressed - I felt the viewing angle was a lot more forgiving than I feared, the 3D was great, and pretty much all the games were awesome - I'd buy them all even without 3D (except Asphalt).
I'm afraid I can't remember anyone in a tan jacket, I was too busy being blinded by the lovely 3D console things! Apart from the older woman in the red jacket who was especially funny going through the Resi bit. I was in the last group to go through there. -

There were lots of European girls in the group I was in at the London one last week and some bloke who looked like he was in his 60's. Wasn't expecting either of those to be there. -

Registered 13 years agoblackxino, that is a posting of some considerable talent. Most amusing, well done indeed. I particularly liked the line about going to special places like the Thorpe Park. Don't go away, more musings of the calibre please. -

Registered 15 years agoQuick question for those of you who've had some hands on time with the 3DS but would any of you say it is worth a purchase if you take away its main selling point, the 3D. I am unfortunately one of the freaks and weirdos who can't actually process 3D images, just double vision and headaches for me. -

Registered 17 years agoI have gone cold on the 3DS a little, I think its the combo of the launch line up being weak (no MGS, no Resi) and the NGP looking far, far better than expected.
The fact the 3DS is coming out soon is really all that keeps me interested as I foresee another DS launch fiasco (no decent titles for 6 months after the launch). -

I absolutely would. The 3D is awesome, but without that you'd still have a supercharged DS. The online system is a lot less obtuse, plus it now has a lovely joystick that is a pleasure to use. The games are very good too, with things like Dead or Alive that really bring a home console experience down to size, or new Pilotwings, or new Virtual Console, or of course the Ocarina game which still has a major visual revamp even without the 3D.
After 3D, it's all about the games for me. So have a good look at the first wave of games coming out (launch games and the ones due soon after) and see what you think. If there's not a lot you fancy, you might be best to wait. For me it's just a list of stuff I want! -

Registered 20 years agoThe 3d is a gimmick - if the third party support keeps up it's definitely worth a purchase anyway. As DFawkes says the hardware is lovely -

Base your decision on the software, I would say; I believe that no game, so far, absolutely relies on being able to see the 3D so you should still be able to play them all, you just won't be able to take advantage of that extra "wow" factor is all. You're in the perfect position to make the choice between the 3DS or the NGP, without the 3D option it will become a battle between the types of games you prefer and how well rendered you prefer them.
