I know it's cliched, but if you're booking early enough in advance it's actually quite easy to get a table at The Ivy, and it's very reasonably priced, excellent food and you're very likely to see some celebs there as well which is fun. -

If I was to go to an expensive restaurant and there was no dress code I'd still want to suit up.
I was in a posh'ish place last night just for a drink and everyone that was walking through the door was dressed nice and smart then there is me sat there in a hoodie, jeans and trainers and I felt rather scruffy and out of place.
My step brother got my family into The Fat Duck on Tuesday and I can't imagine anyone getting to up the drive way without a suit.
I didn't go because I'm poor

Oops, my fault I didn't read through that to well did I?

Registered 15 years agoIf it's a swanky resturant then I'll usually dress up for it, after all, you can always take off a tie or your jacket if you need to.
I tend to work on the "when in doubt, dress better than you have to" rule, although having said that it's been a long time since I've been to a resturant that actually insists on a dress code. -

Registered 13 years agooooh... Dinner looks a bit more reasonably priced. £72 for a main meal to share.
Wife absolutely adores Blumenthal so that would make an awesome treat for her. Cheers guys.
I'll check out the Ivy as well. -

Registered 16 years agoDinner is supposedly booked out for 3 months but you might be lucky with a cancellation.
Another place that is meant to be amazing is Pierre Koffman's restuarant in The Berkley, Knightsbridge. http://www.the-berkeley.co.uk/koffmanns.aspx -
On the topic, I can understand why restaurants have dress codes to be honest (even though most don’t). It’s about respect for the location, the food prepared and the other diners present.
What I don’t understand is nightclubs that don’t let you wear trainers. Again, they could easily stipulate that you should not dress scruffily and use discretion, but what’s wrong with a pair of pristine Prada trainers in a club where you’ll be dancing? Seems stupid to me. -

Cheers.
A few months delay is of no issue. Also gives something to look forward to. -

Registered 16 years agoYeah, I find the whole shoes in nightclubs a bit strange. Ironically at my age now I find myself wearing shoes anyway a lot of the time, but have no inclination of going to a nightclub.

Registered 18 years agoI think if the trainers are white you get knocked back at a club but I've worn vans, onitsuka tigers and had no trouble whereas my friend with white trainers is turned back. -

I didn't get let in somewhere once wearing black Vans. My response to the no trainers declaration was "have you ever tried training in a pair of these?". It didn't work. Cunt. -

Wow, they're not doing bad for somewhere that only opened on Monday

For me, I think it's more a case of "I'm out for (occasion), gonna dress for that." rather than any specific venue etiquette.
Not gonna go grey tie to a restaurant if I'm out to dinner, but a blazer goes down well enough. -
I haven't run into an issue in London yet, no one has turned me away with T-shirt and jeans. I had some frightened looks by the staff in one place I'm canary wharf but I just strolled in and sat down, no one said anything. -

I've been in Michelin starred restaurants with no sign of a dress code. -
