Liked that a lot. I've been lent the book but only read the prologue. I'll definitely be making inroads into it tonight. :)

Yeah, very good opener. I haven't read the books, but it looks like a very promising start, full of political intrigue and lots of boobs and violence.

Loved the ZOMBIES in the pre-credit sequence too.

Next week I'll be playing the Game of Thrones "doggy style" drinking game!

The ending scene was ace. I actually forgot about the incest because of the possible child murder. :D

Do you think he fell on the dog?

That's all I was really worried about. Kid should've listened to his mum!

Haha, I said that after it had finished.

    He's obviously still alive anyway

^ It's a fantasy world, but there's no elves, no orcs, no dragons. You might say it's almost set in a post-magic setting. Magic and fantasy does exist, but they're not the driving forces behind it like you would expect in other shows/movies of it's type.

So far so good but having read the books I just worry that it'll start out well then all go to shite later on as the books have done.

Still though, if Martins unfinished work can get the epic treatment I can dream of the Malazan series getting the same treatment.

Can you imagine the Chain of Dogs!? It'd have to be an entire series in itself and it would be incredible!

I've heard that this series will be difficult to understand if you haven't read the books. Is that a fair call?

I mean, understanding without having to read an FAQ.

I really wish HBO had made The Dresden Files. They know how to adapt faithfully and well. Can't wait for the next episode :)

I would love for HBO to do the Dresden Files, they're some of my favourite books and the previous show didn't do them justice at all.

Watched this last night, great start and really looking forward to more.

Yeah. Shame Nic Cage owns the rights :( could be amazing and lends itself well to serialisation.

Just watched Camelot. It was awful, didn't even manage to concentrate to the end, it doesn't stand a chance next to GOT.

It would be a very good show given the proper respect it's due, but I can't see it happening anytime soon. As would Jim Butcher's fantasy series to be fair, which is also very good.

Really enjoyed the first episode. I was a little worried it would be too much fantasy and not enough substance but my fears were allayed almost immediately.

There's an interesting group of characters and a fair few shocks and surprises nicely setting up future episodes. On the strength of the first viewing I think I'm in for the series.

Oh, did any else think "Assassins Creed" when the kid was climbing?

The first episode was easy enough to understand, HBO stuff usually takes a fair bit of concentration to keep up with the story. It did a decent job of introducing a fair number of characters without too much exposition.

Really enjoyed the first episode last night. The acting and writing was a bit bland in places, but a very good watch on the whole. Not a bad theme song either.

The only bit that annoyed me was the scene when the king arrived in Winterfell and pretended to be an angry and stern character, Stark physically worried and intimidated by his presence, the king visibly grumpy about something. Then a moment later you find out him and Stark were just having a bit of a giggle, a bit of a tongue-in-cheek laugh about formalities. Nobody acts like that. Both of their characters suddenly did a 360 degree turn, just to trick the viewer for the sake of it.

Then a bit later on Stark kneels at the king's feet in a completely informal and friendly situation between the two characters, yet the king isn't an intimidating character in the slightest. This just all seemed to confuse and muddy the relationship between the two, which so far seems to be the most important aspect of the plot.

I thought that bit showed that Ned strongly believes in tradition, and the King is somewhat... lax in that respect

I think that just shows the complicated nature of having a good friend as a King, especially one that you've not seen for 9 years. one hand he wants to have a laugh with his mate but on the other he knows he is the Kings servant and respects his position as his master.

When he King acts kingly, arriving in a huge colourful convoy or bestowing a new title on him, Stark bows respectfully, but they quickly revert back to being mates once the King starts talking about shagging whores and getting pissed.

Yeah I got that Ned was a bit unsure how to act as he hadn't seen the king in 9 years and was happily used to life in Winterfell, a bit out of touch with the rest of the kingdom, but they also mentioned they were old friends from childhood and I just thought that's not how old friends act together in private, down on one knee and all.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

The first episode was certainly well done, but whether the series will actually turn out any good will depend on the overall story.
I felt it tried a bit hard to be "adult" (i.e. gore and boobies), but then I don't know the book(s).

Could turn out to be good overall, the production values are certainly up there. I don't see The Wire comparisons at the moment though, just because both ran on HBO.

If you think this tried too hard to be adult you should give Spartacus B&S and Gods of the Arena a try :)

This is certainly filling the void Spartacus left. That sounds wrong.

I was expecting far more tits and sex and gore to be honest... and was pleasantly surprised that it was more tastefully handled in this rather than just splashing blood all over the screen like the Spartacus shows does.

The ultra violence and sex in Spartacus kind of got in the way of the narrative I found.
