A chance discovery on Prime that I'm enjoying. It's an old school British drama about a dumpy mum looking ambassador stationed in Ireland. It's very British in tone, with overly dramatic acting and clumsy action sequences. It also reminded me of the trend for gentlemen diplomats and the contention with their professional counterparts. It manages some decent and appropriate storylines and sucked me into its world.

Registered 18 years agoSchitt's Creek S1-6. 9/10 overall. Was a bit of a slow start and I struggled with the characters for a season and a half but once it clicked, I thought it was exceptional. It's warm, funny, sweet and deals with relationships in a very real way but without drama. Firmly recommended, and if you started it and binned it, give it another go. The pay off is worth it. -

Registered 7 years agoPretty much my thoughts too. From the first couple of episodes I didn’t think I was going to get much further but it quickly became one of my favourites of last year. -

Registered 18 years agoThe follow up doc on Netflix was great too. The entire cast spent the whole time in tears!
It didn't quite reach the heights of Parks and Rec for me but not far off. Now need to find another 20 mins filler.... -

Ok, that's good to know. We've kind of drifted away from it rather than binning it entirely, after maybe 8 episodes or so. Will endeavour to dive back in!

Registered 13 years agoAnyone watching The Flight Attendant on Sky? I think I like it so far, only 2 episodes in. It's a bit more anxiety inducing than I had expected. -

I preferred it to P&R. Not as funny but just so...nice.

Registered 18 years agoYeah, the lack of edge is definitely a positive. Where you might expect things to go horribly wrong, it all works out in SC. Especially for David.
@monkman, def stick with it. The only reason we did was because of people saying similar things to me!

Felt like it wanted to fill the same space as Killing Eve.
Worth watching I'd say, 7 out of 10 -

More of the same. It's quite formulaic with a different issue each episode and a threadbare overall arch. It's also unrealistic with how involved she gets, but I found it quite watchable and reminiscent of an earlier time.

Registered 1 year agoSurprised you bounced off 99, still great imo.
The latest season is 8/10 and Captain Holt is still the greatest. -

Registered 18 years agoI only gave it a few episodes but I think I was just done with it. I'll go back to it at some point, probably when I start commuting again (wife isn't interested). Same with F is for Family. Really enjoyed the first few but not feeling the latest. -

For a while I was like “This is the closest anything has ever been to the 1990s Spider-Man cartoon. In a good way.”
And then... oh god. But in a good way. I think?
Annoyingly it’s a weekly release so let’s see where it goes. But I’m engaged. -

Registered 4 years agoFinally finished Lovecraft Country.
Eh.
As a weird quasi-anthology show that was making points about race, it was pretty good, but with a fairly weak middle. 7/10
As a Lovecraftian horror (which it was implied to be from the trailers, the early previews, the first episode and the freaking name of the show, so what I was expecting) it fails on every conceivable level. I know it’s hard to do in a visual medium but that there was zero cosmic horror even attempted and it feels a little more than basic horror tropes with some Lovecraftian vocabulary thrown in for good measure. In that perspective it was a 2/10 -

Registered 4 years agoWell, yeah, there’s that uncomfortable “views on race shaped Lovecraft’s writing” thing, but the show didn’t seem interested in that angle. Most of it was almost Scooby Doo like in its revelation - here’s a horror trope, now let’s lift off the mask and why it was Old Man Racism all along. Even as a subversion of “HP Lovecraft was a massive racist in general” it doesn’t really work, the closest they come is literally saying that bluntly in the first episode and then it’s never really attacked from that angle ever again, most because as previously mentioned anything Lovecraftian is discarded after that first episode. -

Registered 9 years agoI guess part of it might be the fault of the source material? I haven't read it (yet), but from what I've heard it doesn't have a whole lot to do with the actual person named Lovecraft. -

Actually a lot better than the first season, mostly thanks to Sean Bean's scenery-chewing turn as an almost Andrew Ryan-like character. It's still full of plot holes and conveniences (like Terence getting killed and then not really being mentioned much at all thereafter, or how Pike seems to go PTSD and then also gets forgotten about for the last couple of episodes) and it still amazes me how fast people seem to be able to travel from one end to another of a 10 mile long train.
But still - pretty damned enjoyable.

Didn't think it was good as season 1, Sean "do it yorkshire" bean's scenery-chewing "acting" is more like a cartoon villain. Jennifer Connelly is the best thing about the show she is barely in s2, she gets 1 major episode and that story is more interesting than train 1 vs train 2 she out acts everyone on the show. Everyone else is just bleh or meh

Still Game: series 9. Very good and maybe not the best series but still solid stuff and the ending was very touching. I will miss the inhabitants of Craiglang.. Except I won't, as I have started from the beginning again.
