V Season 2 - Not great but enjoyable, better than the first series just a shame it has now been cancelled as it is unfinished - 6/10

True Blood season 2 Much better than season 1 (I found that quite dull at times), funny, interesting story lines and I found the chracters to be a lot more likable and fun to watch than in the first series - 9/10

V Season 2 - I actually thought it was Ok. It certainly seemed to have some promise. I only probably go with a 6/10. Shame its been canned.

    Glee series 2 - 7/10

Occasional brilliant episodes but generally the music was worse this series imo, the characterisation and plot was all over the shop and the ending was distinctly underwhelming. The general charm and a couple of the story lines are enough for 7 though.

    Mad Men season 1 - 8/10
Ok so far, not much happens in the show yet i still find it entertaining.

Not really finished the season but Season 3 of Fringe.

I give up. Having the vocal chords of an old man yet the rest of your own body was bad enough...turning into the XIII computer game was enough for me!

Roll on September and hopefully something new and decent!!!
  • Deleted user 26 May 2011 19:59:07
I've tried to get into mad men but I just couldn't. I'll have another go before I give up.
  • Deleted user 26 May 2011 20:08:39
It's so great. Easily my favourite TV show of the last 10 years.

I really, really disliked the Bellivia episodes too, but that episode you mentioned is the last time you'll have to put up with it and the last three episodes were pretty good.

Surely disliking Mad Men prohibits you from mocking me for liking The Vampire Diaries ;)
  • Deleted user 26 May 2011 20:16:32
I don't dislike it, I just don't think I was in the right mood at the time and just switched off. I'll give it another go and probably get hooked.

Nothing will prohibit me from mocking you for that. It's terrible!

Everyone is allowed a guilty pleasure though.

It's not a pleasure if you dislike it though shirley?

Spartacus: Gods of the arena 10/10
More brilliance! Short which was a shame. Enjoyed the new characters, bar 'pardon my tits' from Dexter! Loved seeing Crixis rise up!

    Band of Brothers

I put of watching this as I generally don't enjoy war stories; I didn't finish The Pacific or Generation Kill, but I really liked this one.

    9.5/10

    The Borgias Season 1

The show can be a bit boring, clichéd, meandering, the Borgia's aren't as conniving, ruthless or Machiavellian as I imagined them to be and the first hour of the two-hour pilot was easily the worst episode of the season, but there are glimpses of a very good show there and I ended up liking the show quite a bit.

    7/10

Not quite the same, but I'm watching Breaking Bad for the first time and will be doing weekly reviews of each episode of S1, from the perspective of a first-time viewer, on my blog (it's timed to end the week before S4 begins).

My review of the pilot here.

I've seen a few episodes so far, it's a little hit and miss, but the hits are huge and Bryan Cranston is amazing - I was worried I'd be watching him as Hal from Malcolm In The Middle, but he'd shaken that off within the first few minutes. Brilliant performance.

    Firefly

One of my favourite TV shows. Great characters, including some of the secondary ones - the bounty hunter in the final episode was excellent. Funny dialogue, a sci-fi show which has everything. Shame it finished so quickly.

    10/10

Firefly is fantastic and although it's gutting it did end so quickly, I think it's only helped it to be even greater.

The Event - Yes, I stuck with this, from its mediocre start, to the awful middle and then onto the not so bad last few episodes.

The first half of the series was ok but then they knew it was going to be cancelled, so the second half was re-written with this in mind (bit like Flash Forward) thus, some plot lines were dropped and some characters had their personality changed, I could live with this if then they decided that they wouldn't actually finish the show, instead they leave it with an open ending and more questions unanswered than when it started!

It did at times reach the "so bad it is good" mark and supplied many a humorous moment for me and Mrs Fletche as we sat there ripping it to shreds but overall it was poor, although not as bad as say, Haven or Flash Forward.

So, could have been good but major plot holes and poor acting let it down, 4/10

    Dexter Season 1

A bit late to the party here, but I loved this first season - last episode was a gripper! Some great characters and hoping most of them carry forward to the next season. Looks stunning on DVD upscaled on the PS3. Tempted to not get the BR for season 2. It's a bizarre thing to say, but it's nice to see a bit of swearing for a change - gave it an edge.

Docked a ½ point for the overly long intro credits :p

    9.5/10

@Fletche I just finished that as well. No idea why I stuck with it. I think it might have been for the hot assassin chick. I would also rate it a 4/10. Some of the writing was so utterly stupid its tricky to see how the writers actually got the gig in the first place. The top for terrible writing for me was the nuclear flew rods that were stolen that were being escorted by 4 guys in two cars. I mean really!!!! The series was just full of dumb contrived stuff like that. When you have to make characters do really dumb things to generate drama and make your story work maybe just maybe you are crappy writer.

Still it did have some entertainment value inbetween the really fucking stupid stuff.

    Is BSG any good?

Thinking of lending it off my mate. Firefly too, as I haven't seen that either.

I would rate BSG up to about season 3 where it starts to go a bit Pear-shaped. There is still some good stuff after that but the overal story arc was a bit rubbish for me. Still well worth a watch as when its good its really good.

Make sure you start with the mini series if you do watch it.

    The Sopranos Seasons 1-5 - 10/10

The best TV series I have ever watched (overtaking The Wire). Going to be gutted when I finish Season 6 :(

Ha! Agree with the opening credits, apparently they are done by the same people who do the opening credits for True Blood, so with Dexter I fast forward, with True Blood I sit back and enjoy the song and the visuals :o)

Will do, I assume its included as part of the complete collection boxset?

Is it a set-up for the whole series or a self contained story?

The first season of Dexter is the best one for me. It's still good after that but not quite as good. It takes a few turns after season one that just don't work that well.

I am not sure if the mini series is in the box set. You would hope it is as its pretty much the set-up for the whole story and if you have not seen that you are missing a big chunk of it.
