Iím listening to the Audible book of Northern Lights before I get into the series. Itís more of a radio play thing as theyíve got different actors playing the parts. Maybe thatís the way to go.

I did see the Golden Compass on a flight a long time ago. It wasnít horrific. Just forgettable. It deserved every one of the two to three stars most critics gave it.

That reminds me of the bit that wound me up - the post-episode "Coming next" showed loads of stuff quite deep into the story, rather than just an overview of the next episode. Loads of spoilers too :(
The one at the end of episode one basically showed everything that happens in Northern Lights. I know the story and I was still bummed by how spoilery it was.

It'll be weird when they adapt Subtle Knife and Amber Spyglass and they had to introduce the nut wheel elephant trunk creatures in the other dimension

    Stan Against Evil

Very funny and manages to mix things up to keep the story interesting.

Marianne : 9/10. The best Witch on the Small screen. Watch with subtitles as the dubbing is terrible. Probably only bettered by Haunting on hill house. Just.

Over the past couple of weeks:

Gameface series 2 brilliant and funny. (4on demand) 6 eps
The Crown season 2. brilliant and Royal (Netflix) 10 eps
Guilt. Very good and Scottish (iplayer) 4 eps
The Accident. Emotive and Welsh (channel 4)4 eps

I would recommend all of the above.

His Dark Materials was written by the same screenwriter as The Accident

More of the same, and still amusing - I love his quips :-)

So apparently a BBC drama series of War Of The World's starts tonight at 9pm, I knew nothing of this until seeing it on the guide just now, I really wish this isn't a pile of shit, I've always loved this story and obviously the film was a pile of crap, alas a BBC drama will need to do extraordinary things with its budget given the story, script/acting asside .....

The preview I saw looked like it was more His Dark Materials than Doctor Who production wise

Iím really enjoying his dark materials. Requires a bit of patience but itís ticking the right boxes for me. Read the books but it was so long ago I canít remember much about them. It does seem bewildering but they are giving answers out to most of the stuff thatís causing questions.

Well Mrs Mercury and I thought WOTW on BBC tonight was OK, a bit take your brain out at times but fairly watchable, effects were just about OK, considering, thought the tripod looked sweet and in keeping, look forward to next weeks episode.

Don't get your hopes up too much. I really liked the first episode but it really does it's own boring thing after that. IMO, of course.

Thought War of the Worlds was decent without being anything special. Happy to stick with it as it's only 3 episodes but the jury would have been out if it was any longer.

Polished off Jack Ryan season 2 yesterday. It's fine, I was entertained, and when they make a third season I'll probably watch that too.

    Stan Against Evil (S3)

I'm sad that there are no more to watch - consistently funny all the way through. At least there is a satisfactory conclusion to the story.

    Giri/Haji

Stylish gangland/Yakuza series which the Beeb really should've made a bigger deal of.

Some very cool touches, excellent asynchronous storytelling, great performances (Will Sharpe, oh maaaaan), the scope is huge and the story personal.

Lots of TV is called cinematic these days but this really is

    9/10

    Seriously, Will Sharpe

The Toys that Made Us S3

Light, fluffy documentary about the toy lines of the 80s and 90s.

Itís not going to win any awards, and the ďquick cut edits for comic effectĒ style does get old quite quickly. But it hits all the right nostalgia buttons and tells some interesting stories. Decent enough.

Watched City on a Hill on sky. Have to say I was gripped by it. Hope it comes back for another season. Bacon definitely got the role of seedy old crooked cop part down, so much so that my OH said she couldn't watch it anymore.

@RawShark OTT narration and editing ruins what is a perfectly good topic.

    Blood Drive

Never heard of it when it was on in 2017, its grindhouse style death race film. Its OTT and very fun, it knows its b-movie style content. Julian Slink is a great villain and the actress who plays Grace is excellent in her role as femme fatale. shame it only got 1 season

    9/10

War of the Worlds - BBC version

I had high hopes for this, from the trailers I saw maybe a year ago, that it would be a pretty straight retelling of the original story. They decided to make a series of baffling changes, and turn out an extremely dreary load of old rubbish.

I donít mind writers messing with the story in theory, the Audible version was pretty decent for example, but they made a real pigs ear out of this one. Dull.

    2/10
