    War of the Worlds

Very disappointing. I wanted this to be good as I love the book and the Jeff Wayne's musical and then the BBC managed to completely break it. There were too many unneeded changes, odd omissions and too much social commentary. They even managed to totally miss the point of the ending!

On the slim positive side the setting was good, with some decent production quality. As a period sci-fi it was ok, but as a War of the Worlds it was awful.

    4/10

If you want to watch an interesting adaptation then The Great Martian War is a great watch, although a quite different take on the source.

It did seem to end up as the great doomed struggle against the Red Weed. Oh, and there were some Martians involved right at the very beginning.

I think it's fine to change a story when you are adapting it if you have good ideas and an interesting original take on it but this seemed to excise large chunks of the book, including everything after the 'trapped in the cellar' section and replace it with absolutely bugger all.

For something called War of the Worlds there seemed to be very little actual War in it. Why on earth change the Martians so they are physically strong predator (not that one!) like creatures with no ability to manipulate objects instead of the frail tentacled brain like beings that rely on artificial bodies and machinery to do anything? Also, what exactly were those black exploding spheres they replaced the cylinders with? Were the Martians supposed to be inside those or something? It's marginally less daft than coming down in lightning bolts but not much...

Done right, a largely faithful adaptation of the book could be a pretty damned scary and effective film or TV series but somehow they always seem to bugger it up.

That's disappointing, I'm a huge fan of the book and was looking forward to watching it. Expectations lowered.

    RuPaul's Drag Race UK

It's strange seeing a version of this with funny jokes and a likeable cast. Best series of either version.

The War of the Worlds (Auntie's version)

Well, that was disappointing. A slow, tedious, drear-athon that takes HG Wells' tight, taut novel, brutally extracts any tension and excitement and replaces them with moping and misery.

The cast do what they can and the evocation of turn-of-the-20th-Century England is adequate, but this plodding, melancholic tale lacks any real drama or spark.

    Britain's Biggest Warship

While it's a bit of a propaganda piece it's also an interesting and mildly informative look at the workings of the carrier and her crew.

    The Shield (S4)

This just isnít improving in the way I hoped it might. Still all very one dimensional and predictable. Think this might actually have been worse than season 3.

I hated the spinning black orb things but thought their take on the ending (which let's be honest has always been a major flaw in the original story) was pretty clever if not perfectly executed. Definitely way better than the Spielberg movie, but nowhere near as good as it could have been. Basically I just want to see Jeff Wayne's album art brought to life.

It was also awful, although at least a bit entertaining.

    Banshee - Series 4

Started watching Banshee after seeing it recommended on this forum.
A great end to a fantastic show. Loved every minute of it, although this fourth series didn't seem quite so action-packed as the previous three. Sad to see it end. I will miss those characters.

Stylish gangland/Yakuza series which the Beeb really should've made a bigger deal of.

Some very cool touches, excellent asynchronous storytelling, great performances (Will Sharpe, oh maaaaan), the scope is huge and the story personal.

Lots of TV is called cinematic these days but this really is

    9/10

    Seriously, Will Sharpe
Finished this at the weekend and absolutely loved it. Stylistically fresh and utterly absorbing, it had a cast of characters that seemed so unlikely to work at the start, but gelled beautifully throughout. Would love another series but think it wrapped up pretty neatly.

I need to rewatch Banshee. It really was tremendous television, violent as fuck and the characters were very likeable. One of the best in recent years imo

    Ladhood

Adult comedian Liam Williams reflects on his teenage years to understand his adult life and problems.

The teens stuff is pretty much like a bleaker more realistic (to where I'm from anyway) Inbetweeners or Derry Girls. Drinking, lasses, mates, scary bigger boys.

BBC 3 so all up in the iPlayer now.

    8/10

    War of The Worlds 4/10

Leading lady was ace, as were the tripods and setting. But it was so fucking dull and needlessly added an aftermath story.

Speilberg's modern war version has always been unfairly viewed, but it is by far the most faithful, Byron Haskin's is also a great post war spin.

    Gomorrah season 4.

    Still brilliant.

Sad that things didn't go so well for one of my favourite characters. 😞

We all knew it wasn't going to end well though, i guess. Looking forward to the next series.

I kind of hope the standalone Ciro film gets a general uk release, but won't hold my breath and will assume I'll have to buy it later on disc or stream it instead.

    Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes

It's still brilliant and the perfect antidote to the watered down politically correct tv we have to endure these days.

Glad to see all these reviews of War of the Worlds. Will save the effort of sitting through the 2nd and 3rd episodes in the hope it'll get better. Me and the Mrs thought the first episode was terribly dull, but couldn't quite work out why. It should have felt more dramatic and exciting given what was occurring on screen (especially towards the end of the ep), but it seemed so lifeless and flat.
