@JoelStinty What came out about Jeph Loeb? Am interested as I also found Daredevil S2 to be a bit of a downer, sandwiched inbetween two stellar seasons of TV. (That biker apartment block fight tho!)

Also, holeee shit I forgot how good John Lithgow was in Dexter!!

    The Plot Against America

Really strong alternate history story from Philip Roth based on what may have happened if right-wing figures Charles Lindberg and Henry Ford had taken the presidency and prevented America's entry to WW2. It's obviously a parable for Trump and the rise of populism, but is never too on the nose about it - instead focusing on the day to day experiences of a Jewish family living through tumultuous times. Some have said it's a little slow, but I like that it takes the time to tell the story. And at six episodes (and an actual ending) it doesn't outstay its welcome.

If you liked The Man in the High Castle this will be up your street.

Children of Dune: this may be the last good thing SyFy ever made. It condenses dune messiah and CoD down to three 90 minute episodes and actually does a good job of it.

The CGI leaves a lot to be desired but other than that the production seems relatively lavish and the cast is good.

    Daredevil (S3)

A return to form after a dip in the second season. The story is more focused and is better for it. There's some interesting new characters and Fisk remains a good villain.

    The Night Manager - 5/10

Little more than a James Bond lite, given the usual BBC "hit water cooler series" hype and hyperbole.

Tom Hiddlestone demonstrates his remarkable binary acting range - either the moody-slash-quizzical frown, or the teeth clenched smile of a demented marionette puppet. Hugh Laurie is laughably miscast and about as menacing as my Asda delivery driver, while the supporting cast is largely as convincing as the background of the Queen Vic; Olivia Coleman - great as always - can only do so much to rescue a show.

To its credit I will say it has a reasonably interesting story, and a very satisfying conclusion.

I was thinking of giving Bodyguard a go next, but suspect more of the same.

    Sinner S3 - 3/10

Absolute guff. The first series was brilliant. Second decent. This was absolute garbage. Terrible writing and a boring meandering story. Won't be surprised if this dies after one or more two series.

@Trowel Bodyguard starts fantastically then crawls up its own arse. It does that BBC thing of "it's finished buuuut we might get another series so here's some loose ends"

Watch the first episode and then imagine that the good guys win and everything is wrapped up neatly.

    Treme , series 1-4

I liked this, seemingly gentle story telling of the residents of New Orleans getting their lives back together post Katrina.
It really opened my ears to the music scene down there with some stunning performances.
The various character arcs wrapped up nicely but I did kind of want more.

    The Wire (S1)

Envy me, Wire fans, for I have watched the first series cold.

But on topic - not a whole lot I can fault. Breaking Bad is still my watermark for US shows but I have no doubt this will run it close or surpass it. Interestingly, you can also see where BB took some cues. I thought it would have dated badly but it probably acts as a period piece now, which is wholly relevant in current times.

Everything makes sense. It's not "depressing" but it's certainly believable. Though none of it particularly surprises me. It's the small things that get you, really. I suspect Baltimore hasn't changed all that much.

It wrapped up fairly nicely so I am intrigued as to where it goes.

Lastly - Omar is everyone's favourite, yeah?

Probably a few too many episodes for my liking but I know that's a staple of US shows. I prefer to get through in 6-10 and this clocked 13 solid hour eps.

    8/10

Penny Dreadful City of Angels - 7/10
Very, very different from the previous PDs, and not as good to be honest, though props to the writers for trying something like this and handling the subject matter reasonably well. Biggest problem I think was that it was written very much as a set up so there's a lack of resolution, major character arcs left unfinished, and the second season may not happen. Still, I enjoyed it and Natalie Dormer was impressive in multiple roles. The soundtrack was great too with some really cool dance scenes (not something I'd usually enjoy) and a motif for the bad guys that was straight out of Indiana Jones.

I really should catch up with this. Loved the first 2 seasons that I saw, as you say, the music is brilliant.

I've never seen such a massive drop-off in quality from The Sinner last season to this one. I didn't even bother finishing it.

It's like they forgot what made the first seasons good.

This season they spend 7 episodes doing fuck all and then rush everything into the final ep.

I've got to watch Succession. It's not normally the kind of genre I would go for but everyone, especially on here, seems to love it.

Jealous you get to watch it for the first time. I seem to remember that, like Breaking Bad, it only gets better with every season and there aren't any lulls in quality.

    Enjoy!
