Some stuff about the factory Apple uses to produce iPods and iPads Excessive overtime is routine, despite a legal limit of 36 hours a month. One payslip, seen by the Observer, indicated that the worker had performed 98 hours of overtime in a month. Workers attempting to meet the huge demand for the first iPad were sometimes pressured to take only one day off in 13. In some factories badly performing workers are required to be publicly humiliated in front of colleagues. Crowded workers' dormitories can sleep up to 24 and are subject to strict rules. One worker told the NGO investigators that he was forced to sign a "confession letter" after illicitly using a hairdryer. In the letter he wrote: "It is my fault. I will never blow my hair inside my room. I have done something wrong. I will never do it again." In the wake of a spate of suicides at Foxconn factories last summer, workers were asked to sign a statement promising not to kill themselves and pledging to "treasure their lives". |

I know I can't comment in these threads without being seen as defending Apple. But isn't this just "Chinese factories". Apple rulz etc. -

It's apple outsourcing to companies that use labour practices that we in the west fought against. To transfer that to emerging countries who don't yet have such rights for workers is hypocritical and unethical for us to be happy with it to happen there.
Nothing wrong with going to these countries because the cost of labour is lower but they shouldn't allow these practices to occur and, if they do, they should move to another supplier. -

They have these big nets outside all the windows at their main Chinese plant to catch them now (not a joke).
They get paid really quite well, the problem is they sleep eat and work in the same place. I like my job, but I'd probably think about topping if I had to live there. -

Bumping an old thread I know, but it's always a bit odd that this is somehow considered Apple's fault (and Apple's alone). Foxconn make electronics for everybody!
Some of Foxconn's clients:
Apple Inc. (United States)[18][5][19]
Acer Inc. (Taiwan)
Amazon.com (United States)
Asus (Taiwan)
Intel (United States)
Cisco (United States)
Hewlett-Packard (United States)[20][19]
Dell (United States)
Nintendo (Japan)
Nokia (Finland)[18]
Microsoft (United States)
Sony (Japan)
Sony Ericsson (Japan/Sweden)[19]
Samsung (Korea)
Vizio (United States)

This old chestnut. They're in the same price bracket as their competitors. You know, the ones also using Foxconn?
Not saying it makes it okay, but it's a bit ridiculous to single out one company here. -

But none of those companies have legions of people who'll rabidly defend anything they do. -

Jesus, that's terrible.
Does anyone know how many iPads have been damaged?
