This looks bloody lovely, but I'm put off by the fact you only ever have one ship. Half the charm of these is trading away and buying bigger and better ships as you go.

    Boooooo.

I'm in. There is very little in the way of blowing shiny things up in space around.

From what I've read it's pretty upgradeable, you can walk around it and you can still own lots of other ships.

Can't seem to find this for under £35 quid anywhere now. Anyone seen it cheap recently (links on last page have all stuck their prices up)?

    Download copy preferable...

Played this for a couple of hours, performance on my i5 2500k, radeon 6800 and 8 gigs of ram PC is on average 25-30fps, occasional highs of 50 depending where I am and down to 15 in busy places. This doesn't change much if I lower settings either.

There are a lot of busy places, space is packed with tons ships and debris, makes for a rather impressive view.

I've come across a couple of annoying bugs, one where the door to the skunks cockpit wouldn't open but you can jump to it from the menu, one where I sat slightly out of place in the cockpit chair which stopped me being able to see the info screen, getting up and sitting down fixed that and a game stopping bug in the campaign where my freighter wouldn't sell some energy cells preventing me from continuing.

Gonna reload to an earlier save and see if I can get past it.

Got it downloading now, my specs are similar to yours, doesn't sound too promising.
Been looking for an excuse to upgrade anyway...

Going by the steam forums it needs a performance patch regardless of specs.

Yeah it seems to be getting buggier the further I get in, CTDs, wrong missions firing or not being able to complete them.

Well, it seems kind of buggy, and has poor performance... pretty much exactly what you would expect from an 'X' game. A cursory pootle around the opening sectors shows some lovely scenery, and some seriously impressive space stations. I imagine it will be some time before I get to any really meaty content.

The biggest performance hits seem to come from shadows and SSAO, if anybody is looking for extra fps.

A lot of it seems like it is because it isn't as intimidatingly complex as before.

Please tell me it hasn't sacrificed the depth I know and love from X3.

Can I still build shipywards and fleets, and manage trading routes? Is there still a reactive supply-and-demand economy built in?

Multiple factions, all of which hate or like or love each other?

It wouldn't be an X game if it didn't need a few patches to work properly! I had a very brief go yesterday and, though you can play it with the pad, it definitely felt better with M+K/B. Little things like being able to roll AND strafe AND yaw plus having set velocity rather than hold to accelerate or drop to zero. And as for complaints about the voice acting; Have they played one of these games before?

DB: Out of interest, how much have you enjoyed the series in the past?

Just trying to get an idea of how to frame your comments - from a newcomer or veteran of the series.

I won't be getting it for a while anyway because I have a huge backlog - and £40? Fuck off, the last game was nearly half that when it came out - but it's been on my radar since they announced it so I really want to hear everything I can about people's hands-on experience with the game and how it shapes up compared to the preview stuff in the series.
