Thinking of heading over for a week to Blighty with the family. Not all that interested in theme parks and the like just nice countryside, lakes, good food and perhaps a sampling of some fine English ales. Any recommendations? Never been to Devon and Cornwall but have heard good things about it. |

Registered 16 years ago+1 for Devon.
You have some lovely seaside towns, good countryside. Plenty of pubs for the ale.
Cornwall just down the road (well, not too far away anyway), the Eden project....
Recommend visiting Exmouth beach, Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton. Sidmouth and Budleigh are really quite 'quaint' old school seaside towns. -

Registered 12 years agoAnother +1 for the west country, if you don't mind going the extra distance to cornwall, I'd definitely recommend it. Depends where else you're going... If you're closer to the midlands, the cotswolds are beautiful, as is the peak district a little further north. -
Pottering about the New Forest is always good, plenty of independent brewers there for ciders and ales, country pubs and quaint, quirky villages tucked about the place, and not that far from civilisation if you ever felt the need to visit a John Lewis or Argos. -

If you want lakes, Lake District around Cumbria or the Highlands (if you want Lochs). -

Registered 11 years agoBit of a leftfield choice, but Suffolk is worth a visit - lots of unspoilt medieval towns like Lavenham and some really nice coastal towns like Southwold. -

They now have direct flights to redneckhicksville I hear...
But being Switzerland you will need a passport. -
The Broads, The Lakes, The Brecon Beacon or Devon.
The latter is where I am from. You could do a lot worse than following the river Dart from source to mouth. Gorgeous villages and towns and water. Dartmoor itself is king. North Cornish coast is lovely too - tintagel-port Isaac and gaverne -

We've decided to have a break this summer in either the Lake District or Cornwall, hiring a cottage for the two of us and our what-will-be-8 month old. Our only stumbling block is that we know absolutely fuck all about either place, so have any of you beautiful people got recommendations on towns/areas etc that are awesome, and what shitholes to avoid? -

Registered 7 years agoBamburgh is about 30 miles north of alnick and is just beautiful.
You really can't beat the lake district though, by far the prettiest place in England. Try Keswick or Ambleside for starters, although there isn't really a bad part of cumbria. -

Registered 8 years agoIsle of Scilly for unspoilt beauty - on Tresco and St Martens you'll find the most beautiful white sandy beaches anywhere in the world.
Best to stay on St Mary's but make sure you visit the other islands. Loads of exploring, boat trips, beautiful beaches, very little traffic and just off the Cornish coast.

Registered 10 years agoGet a Yurt. We did a two centre Glamping week in the Lakes last year.
Wasdale & Near Sawrey. Both are set on decent National Trust campsites.
Lots of easy going rambles close by.
Depends what you're after, personally I'd avoid the big tourist towns or traps. These will be gridlocked in high season.
Edale in the Peak District is good and accessible, 30 minutes from Manchester or Sheffield.
Northumbria is very remote compared to the Peaks and Lakes.
Snowdonia is alright, but a lot of driving if youwant to visit attractions, same as the Lakes really..
I'd recommend a two centre stay though, most places offer 3, 4 or 7 night bookings. I grew up in the Lakes and know them well. Let me know if you want any opinions on location.
My target for next year is a week touring the Cairngorms. Can't decide on May or October though. -

To be honest after going to Cornwall a lot (friends down there) over the last 6 years it's not actually the coastline I've got a problem with. It's the result of over-popularity meaning that all the beaches are rammed.
Nor I but it's still good info for anyone interested.
My favorite coastline is Northhumberland.
If your looking for that secluded beach feeling you won't get it anywhere in Cornwall/Devon.
It's still a great place to visit mind and there is a lot of interesting scenery and places to visit off the beaten track. -

Nice one buddy, I'm not sure a camping trip with an 8 month old will be much fun though, plus we're soft city folk who like solid buildings a bit too much. We're tentatively looking at Ullswater or the north side of Windermere at the moment, is Ambleside much cop? Or Glenridding? We don't want to be too remote really, so close to or in a village is fine of us. Or should we be looking further north? -
