Well after a refreshingly simple wifi update to 5.0.1 this morning (by the time i'd had a dump and a wash twas done!) it seems Apple have sorted out any battery bug's.

From 8.00am till this minute my three month old 4 is on 96% charge! Sure ive not done much with it, few text messages, wifi to read bits of stuff on the bog, couple of app updates...but its still an impressive improvement none the less.

I'm new to OS X, bought an iMac to have a go at writing some IOS apps. Is there any way to effectively turn 'numlock' off, so that I can use the numeric keypad for cursor control like on the PC?

What do you expect from an "operating system tutorial"? (honest question)

The Finder has a decent help on "common tasks", there's also information there on equivalencies (i.e. Mac terms and what people might be used to from Windows).

If you're totally new to Mac OS X, I really like the separate pasteboard (= clipboard) for copy & paste (cmd-c/x/v) and for search (cmd-e/g). You can search for one term (copied to the search pasteboard via cmd-e) with cmd-g and immediately replace by whatever is in your c&p pasteboard via cmd-v for example.

I've not found a decent tutorial yet, but the official Apple breakdown of Lion might be a good place to start.

    http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/whats-new/features.html

When you first start your new mac it should run you through the basics though, if you don't think that's enough then I'd honestly think about spending half an hour with one of the Genius bods at your local Apple store. As much as we take the micky out of them, they know their stuff and should help you get the most out of your new toy. And I believe those tutorials are free.

I have to ask, what exactly is the point of Reader on iOS? I thought it saved pages so that you could read offline, but all it seems to do is save the link as a bookmark. Unless it does something else that I've missed?

All I use it for is to strip all the crap out of websites to give me easily readable text for internet pages.

I never really thought of it having a purpose beyond that, tbh.

Sorry, I actually meant Reading List!

The Reader feature is very useful.

Yeah, I use it a lot as well, for stuff you want to read later, but see no need to bookmark it.

I prefer using something like Instapaper for read later type stuff, but it's nice to read a web page without all the gubbins getting in the way.

Been using Lion now for a few days. Very nice indeed.

Love the way you can assign programs from the dock to various desktops.

It's very good, I'd leave it a week or two as the servers are being hammered.

Question about iDisk and iWeb. I think they'll still available but once the switch to iCloud is done, they are gone? Is this correct?

What's the best way to get PDF files and the like to an iPad?
  • Deleted user 28 December 2011 15:22:59
    dropbox

Can't you just drop them into iTunes and they show up in iBooks?

    In the PDF "Collection"?

PDF's are one of the few things you can download from Safari and the just go straight into iBooks.

Can anyone help me with, what should be a simple issue, but fucking Mac OS confuses the hell out of me.

I am surfing the net, and have a movie running. What I want is a movie playing on part of the screen while I surf the net. But Lion puts the movie on one "desktop" and safari has it's own. How can I overlay the two?
  • Deleted user 12 February 2012 18:45:52
Drag it into the same space?

I always snap them to one half. Think it is part of bettertouchtool - which is an essential and free app IMO.

What do you mean drag to same space sorry? I can drag between desktops if I go to mission control, but I cannot seem to drag onto safari.

I'll try downloading that bettertouchtool cheers.

Any other quality titled Mac apps to laugh at?

Ah! Solved it. Full screening an app makes it go into it's own desktop, so you can't overlay. By taking safari out of full screen it works.

I really miss BetterTouchTool. Had to uninstall it from 2 macs as automatic sleep ceased to work on both, even on a clean Lion install.
