Are there any people on here who still care for the DS? I know its rather peculiar but I quite like the last days of any systems, where the attention has gone elsewhere, for a number of reasons. First, the games that come out are normally niche and original, and / or fully take advantage of the system. Stuff like Okami and God of War 2 on the PS2, Tales of Symphonia and Baton Kaitos on the Gamecube, Banjo-Tooie and Conker on the N64, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Street Fighter 3 Alpha, Radiant Silvergun on the Saturn, etc. These games often become very collectable too. Even though I have a 3DS I'm very keen on what lies ahead for the DS for the above reasons. Solatarobo, new entries in the Harvest Moon and Kirby franchises, Monster Tale, Okamiden and others are coming out or have just launched. I think the DS is well worth keeping an eye on even though its bigger 3D brother is out. Anyone else feel the same? Anyone else still focused on the DS? |
The last days of the DS.... anyone still interested?

Registered 15 years agoWell, the 3DS has highlighted to me the DSi back catalogue (which I skipped) so I mused the possibility of buying a DSi-XL for the bigger screen/battery etc..
Then I realised how many fucking handhelds I own and came to my senses. -

I think the latest Fire Emblem (remake of 3) still needs to be released in the west.
And Inazuma Eleven lol -
New Professor Layton and Dragon Quest Monsters later in the year. -
Devil Survivor 2 next year, and Rune Factory 3 gets a UK release in September.
Fire Emblem I've been keeping an eye on, still no sign of an EU/US release, even though Nintendo hinted that it would be one of the games to bridge the gap between DS and 3DS last winter.
Still, I've got Strange Journey, Golden Sun, Knights in the Knightmare and loads more to finish as well. I'm so glad the 3DS is backwards compatible- I'll be working through the DS pile for years. -

Registered 13 years agoStill very much into the DS; in fact, it'll probably be my favourite console of all time by the time I finish all the games I want to play on it. Currently working my way through all the Dragon Quest games, but I'm also looking forward to Monster Tale, (fingers crossed) a western Ni No Kuni release and (fingers and toes crossed) the Professor Layton RPG from Level 5. -

The 3DS simply doesn't interest me enough yet. The region locking really puts me off as well. -

The amount of backloggery I've got going on on the DS is getting ridiculous! The problem with the system for me is a) I actively collect for it and b) the feckin' games I buy for it tend to be RPGs - ie titles that take dozens and dozens of hours to complete!
And yet I still need to pick up more games for it and anticipate the likes of Solatorobo so much. I haven't even began to explore the US games' library yet either, or the Japanese one for that matter.
There is enough gaming goodness on the DS to keep me going for the next ten years probably!
I have to say, of all the games that are DS-bound, that new Kirby looks like a whole load of fun.... -

Registered 17 years agoI'm still playing through the DS Dragon Quest games and still have Chrono Trigger DS to play through too. I really wouldn't mind trying Radiant Historia out. I will definitely will be getting Etrian Odessey 3 and Dark Spire at some point too.
There just isn't any point in getting a 3DS until I get through most of that, hopefully they will continue to support the DS for a little while longer as I still think it has alot to offer. -
Etrian Odyssey III is easily one of the best DS games, such a timesink. -

Registered 17 years agoThe 3DS has reinvigorated my interest in all things DS. I've borrowed a copy of the first Prof. Layton, and am definitely looking to give 999 and Ghost Trick a try. Will also get Okamiden, and catch up on some of the older classics - Bowser's Inside Story, the Castlevania games, maybe one of the Fire Emblems (whichever's the best), to name a few. -
The only DS Fire Emblem game with a Western release is Shadow Dragon at the moment, but Ghost Trick and 999 are great shouts.
Castlevania- Dawn of Sorrow is widely accepted as the best but personally I prefer Ecclesia. Tougher, but a bit less emo. -

Right there with you on those! I'm about 3/4 of the way through DQ4, and have a brand new copy of 5 sitting waiting to be played. I really want to get DQ9 as it is reduced in Argos and HMV, and GAME have just knocked down DQ6! I really want to buy the latter but won't be playing them for a long while, so might wait a bit before buying them. Hate buying games that I won't actually be playing for a long while, and I already have enough of a backlog on the DS from all the collecting I've been doing for thel ast while.
I've got Chrono Trigger and Suikoden Tierkreis on the go right now as well. Really want Etrian Odyssey 3 too.... too much games on the DS!!!
Regarding the 3DS.... I think it is a very different system to the DS. The games I have for it are in 3D, and are arcade-y in nature. You don't get arcade style games on the DS in abundance. The DS can do 3D fairly well, but the vast majority of its best games are in 2 dimensions.
Both systems sit well together and complement each other depending on what the gamer wants to play - the 3DS offers beautiful 3D graphics and arcade gameplay in games like Ridge Racer, Pro Evo, Dead or Alive and Street Fighter, and the DS provides hardcore strategy and role playing games in abundance. There's room for both types of games in my collection, thats for sure. And because of the change in direction for 3DS games, will it ever properly replace the 2DS? I think the 3DS will have a library more akin to that on the PSP - bigger, grander games with lots of emphasis on visuals but not so much of depth and lastability maybe....
Fingers crossed that 3DS will provide plenty of RPGs and portable friendly games with tonnes of lifespan when the 2DS does finally pass into obscurity over the next year or two. -

Registered 16 years agoBought a few games recently: Radiant Historia, Ghost Trick, Dragon Quest IX, and The Last Window (the only one of them I've played, and I'd recommend it for under £13 at Shopto). I'm not sure about what's still to come, but I would like to play Rune Factory 3.

I want to get Radiant Historia, did you import it and from where? any good deals? -
Wow, thanks for that linky Fabricated.

@Trotsky
I imported from Videogamesplus.ca, they are pretty good for Atlus stuff. -

Aware of its (PAL) rarity, I had been searching for it online for quite some time. The only copies were either wildly expensive or in a foreign language.
One day late last summer I walked into my local GAME and there it was in the pre-owned DS shelf for €20. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes for a second!
Went up to the counter with it and checked out the "guts" - it was complete and in perfect condition. English version too so I was very pleased with my lucky find.
And its very very good too. Its not the most hardcore RPG you will ever play, but it looks beautiful and is very story driven, without too much dialogue. There's a nice sense of place to the game and some reasonable characters. I really enjoy the battle system, though I have two issues; the leveling up system and the way your team changes as you go through the game. Some party members go off and others join meaning you don't get a consistant team at the earlier part of the game. The leveling doles out XP depending on your characters' levels. A low level character involved in a fight with a higher level enemy gets a tonne of XP, but if you are even a little bit higher in terms of your level you get hardly any. This means that grinding isn't much of an option as its a waste of time grinding lower level opponents. Mind you, it makes it quite accessible in some ways and user friendly as the game sort of controls your levels if you see what I mean, as its a linear game, at least during the first half.
Its well worth pursuing for its playability, but I wouldn't go paying silly money for it unless you are a DS collector or enthusiast, or a hardcore RPG fan. There are RPGs on the DS for much cheaper, but if you love the DS and want one of its hardest to find games, I'd be on the look out in like likes of GAME as thats where you will get it at a good price. -

Registered 16 years agoI got my copy of Radiant Historia from Planet Axel, but it's a bit cheaper at VGP. I doubt it'll fall in price much, if at all, so I'd recommend getting a copy as Atlus print runs are sometimes relatively small.

At the last count, this is what I haven't even started yet, most of them picked up cheap in the last couple of years, and about half a dozen from the EG recommendations thread.
Nice mix of genres, well over a years worth of handheld gaming goodness for me. Suffice to say, the 3DS games drought hasn't bothered me much!

Megaman Zero Collection
Sonic Classic Collection
Trauma Centre 2
Nanostray 2
Civ Rev

Registered 17 years agoYep, definitely. Better than Phantom Hourglass in many respects, worse in others. You'll enjoy it more if you haven't played PH.
Popped into HMV yesterday to see if they had any cheap games. Most of the games were ridiculously overpriced, although they did have Ghost Trick and one of the DQ games for £20. Was tempted by the former, but I think I'll wait for it to drop a bit more. As for DQ, not sure about the series - which is the best one again?
I've had a copy of Golden Sun: Dark Dawn since it came out, I think now would be a good time to start that. -

I have about the same amount of DS games either on the go (or kinda on the go) and plenty of games that are factory sealed! The DS in the only format really which I have such backloggery on - I guess it is as a result of my collecting slant I have been on for the last year or so with it.
I also want to buy a few more titles before they go out of print. I desparately want Mario vs Donkey Kong DS 2, Bowser's Inside Story and Solatorobo or whatever its called. When I pick those up I'm going to stop buying DS games until I have a good bit of the backlog cleared.
I'm strongly considering actually semi-banning myself from buying anymore games now for a good few months and only picking up games that are either dirt cheap - genuinely cheap, or that are arcade-style and / or retro. In other words games that are short and replayable. I really need to get through my DS shelf as its a joke buying new DS games at the minute when I have so many to play! I suppose I was just hoarding for the future and getting as amny as I could before the format went wollop. -
@Kay
Ah, Dragon Quest, there's a question close to my heart! V and VI are my favourites, really good storytelling, with the lifelong struggle of the hero in V being one of my favourite RPGs of all time. They aren't linked, plotwise, you can play them in any order. VI came out recently and is a damn sight easier to find- expect to pay £20 on the high street. IV and IX are still good though.
@Trotsky
Spirit Tracks is an odd fish really- if you've played other Zelda games, it's got much less overworld, but good dungeons. If you haven't, go for it, and if you like it pick up Phantom Hourglass too.
@MrVengeance
I'd quite like Solatorobo too, but waiting for it to go cheap- it's not like I need any more RPGs. Nearly picked up Apollo Justice for £12 yesterday, but reminded myself that there are still two unfinished PW games on the shelf. -
I still have mine, and Im kidding myself waiting for Retro Game Challenge 2.
