I still have a copy of the original PC version of Soldner X and it is very odd having a PC game that you just insert the disc and play like a console game (no install IIRC).

I'd love to play it, but you can't buy it from anywhere. Stupid fucks in Japan think people still buy boxed games and have optical drives in their PCs. I nagged the rolling gunner dev into releasing the game on steam a few months back, but the message is never going to penetrate their obsolete business model idiocy unless you fax them or some bullshit.
One of the best indie shmups you can buy and one of my faves. Battle Traverse.

I take it 360 patches aren't as available as PS3 ones are for emulators? Only patch disc I heard of is the Cave STG Collection one which has all of the DLC and is apparently DRM free so copiable, sadly only available in the very pricy compilation (of which I already owned 90% of when ot came out so skipped it). Not seen it floating arpund online either sadly... Doesn't cover DDPDOJ though obviously as 5PB ported that and Ketsui IIRC. -

It's great, like they cherry picked the best parts of Progear, Akai and Deathsmiles. Good presentation and art too.

Registered 19 years agoThe Japanese doujin shooter scene is huge with several hundred games, but the problem is it's nigh on impenetrable, you really have to dig through a lot of crap to get to the good stuff.
I went on a deep dive some years ago and found a few that were worth a shot, like Ring^-27 which Electric Underground just did a video about that's at the jankier Kenta Cho end of production, while others are very professionally produced and presented like Valhellio, but most were not and Touhou is a very prominent influence in a massive amount of them, which sucks imo. And a ton of weird shit like Ace of Seafood or awash with waifus, chibi witches, gundam suits and sword bullshit.
Hellsinker is probably the hardest to get into, and play. I'm told it's a good game, but I have no idea what's happening.
Here's a pretty good little game, it's free. http://www7b.biglobe.ne.jp/~orchard/main/stg_project2.html
While I'm on the subject Cho Ren Sha 68k is definitely worth the bandwidth. https://web.archive.org/web/20190726062221/http://www2.tky.3web.ne.jp/~yosshin/my_works/download.html

Registered 19 years agoOh man, REVOLVER360 RE:ACTOR is a game I seriously underestimated until I watched the top scoring replay ingame, it's been sat in my steam library for years and I never really bothered with it.
Game is very cool indeed. You control your rotation and have a bullet clearing shot, so seemingly inescapable fans of bullets are a single line if you flip the view on it's side, then you can get some of the juiciest clears I've seen in a shmup. It's great.
Ignore how they're playing it in this review, they suck.

Registered 19 years agoNo, it's much more like a shmup than Ikaruga. I got good at that, but looking back objectively, the polarity gimmick was shit and the game relied too much on memorisation.
This is much more intuitive. The reviewer of this game is fucking gash at it though.

Registered 15 years agoI see there have been a few console announcements at Shooting Game Daikanshasai 2021:
Psikyo Shooting Collection for PS4/5/Xbone (possibly an all in one package rather than split into 2 or 3 titles like on Switch and an extra training mode) (undated) .
A Cotton 2/Guardian Force/Cotton Boomerang compilation for PS4 and Switch in September.
A Deathsmiles 1 and 2 (and all extra modes)for Switch, Xbone and PS4 in December.
Strikers 2020, a sequel to the Strilers 1945 series for unnamed platforms and no release date.
And Dodonpachi Blissful Death DXwhich sounds like a Daioujou port of a mobile game with a 500¥ price tag...
Could be tempted by the Cotton and Deathsmiles releases if ported well... -

Registered 19 years agoThe DDP DOJ port is from a sodding flip phone game. I thought it was the iPad version, but nope, it's a 1:1 ratio box with a hamstrung version of the game. I can only assume its devs have one hell of a lenient contract with Cave, but it reeks of shovelware. -

As a company I will never understand Cave in some respects they deserve all they get. There's so much money to be made porting their games to Steam, PS4/5 and switch but they obv can't be arsed.

Registered 18 years agoThe flip phone thing is a different series - they've also got a version of Sorcerian even though there aren't any modern ports of that either. -

Registered 19 years agoIt's the same series, Blissful Death is the literal translation of Dou Ou Jou. And the game is literally Dou Ou Jou, just with a different aspect ratio, 30 frames, and some of the larger popcorn removed.
It's like calling DonPachi Episode 4 or DoDonPachi III a different series.

Registered 18 years agoI mean it's a different series of ports - the G-Mode Archives rather than something like M2's ShotTriggers or Hamster Arcade Archives where they're bringing the original versions. They're all flip phone ports which is why they're porting all sorts of stuff. There's a version of Zanac on there too, and the version of Tetris I used to play on the phone while I was in Japan.
Much easier for everyone involved to give permission to G-Mode to let them use their old flip phone port rather than get something like Saidaioujou working on a system that someone can buy.
It's a specific type of nostalgia they're selling too - I know I have plenty of good versions of Tetris but I'd be tempted to pay 500 yen to try the one I used to play again. Or if they were to port across the version of Ys The Oath of Felghana that I played through with the hilariously Ngage-style low quality software rendered 3D for 500 yen I'd be likely to give that a go, rather than shell out for a faithful port on Switch, since I already own the definitive PC version.

Registered 19 years agoOh I get you. It's not exactly doing anyone or the game any good though, it's just a soulless licensed property cash in.
I'd love nothing more than for M2 to get stuck into it and HD the game like DFK was for Resurrection. I'm pretty cold on SDOJ though, it's not up to the standard of any of the other DDPs. I have the 360 version, which I suppose is as close as anyone will ever get to it at this point.
Still holding out hope for the mame rom though, apparently the mame devs have the only dump of it and will release it in a romset once they're satisfied the game is no longer commercially viable for Cave.

Registered 18 years agoThat’ll be either very soon or a long way off due to the Exa-Arcadia version. I’d be happy enough with a digital version that worked on modern Xboxes as I’ve barely played it. -

Registered 7 years agoI find DDP SDOJ unplayable the screen is covered by 90% of your shot and it's just impossible to see anything. It's a shame as you can't even appreciate the sprite work either. -

Registered 19 years agoI wouldn't call it unplayable, I can see the bullets fine as they're overlayed on top of everything, it just takes some adjustment. I had the same problem as you with Crimson Clover, with it's avalanche of stars but I got used to it. I think it's the waifu thing and the graphical style I wasn't keen on. The game is otherwise essentially DOJ with none of the slowdown and harder bosses. -

Not really. It's interesting for sure, but I'd have to play it more to get the dangle of it. It's very busy and everything is very big, it feels like you're playing zoomed into a regular 4:3 top down shooter. It'll take me a little adjustment.
