    @Dirtbox

Yeah from videos the main ship looks huge I presume it has a small hitbox?

It does, yeah. Everything is still a little on the hoofing side, but I'm starting to get a feel for it. Some of the pickups are a little obscure in the looks department, but it's not actually a bad game.

Strongly recommend this one. It's pennies and it's pretty awesome.

What’s everyone’s preference for orientation? I preferred horizontal but vertical has so many better games

My all-time fave, Tyrian 2000, was vertical, so maybe it's vertical for me.

Vertical makes more sense to gauge where your hitbox is.

Nearly, nearly beat R-Type Final 2 on the second-from-lowest difficulty. I swear your hitbox in that fills half the screen.

Can't believe people are actually being suckered into buying it, but I suppose it's the most basic bitch of all shooters that even your father has heard of. There's 35 years of evolution between that turd and modern shooters.

A bit harsh. R-type is a stone cold classic that is just not for you. Probably in the same way that Ikaruga was a horrible experience for me, yet it is a highly thought of game.

I'm still waiting for my R-Type Final 2 backer's code, despite non-backers being able to buy and play it now. Grrr.

By the way, the excellent Infinos Gaiden is having a very rare sale for the next couple of days:

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/771070/Infinos_Gaiden/

Soundtrack by the man behind the brilliant Thunder Force V ost.

    Edit:
Btw, the original Infinos (Gaiden being effectively Infinos 3) is a free download on the dev's site below, though it is far more basic in all ways:

    http://picorinnesoft.web.fc2.com/game.html

Sadly Infinos 2 disappeared with the demise of the Playism store.
The Infinos games may be of interest to those thinking of buying the upcoming Andro Dumos 2, as it is the same Dev behind them all (just one guy I gather).

Ikaruga is crap too. I worked on Brighton Pier when the first R-Type cab in the country arrived and played it to death, and it was massively influential to the point where most shooters that came after it for around 7 years was a rip off. But it's pixelated tedium, continues to be and will always be. It's the only game where I die out of boredom, trying to hurry the game along as it glacially potters through it's achingly slow setpieces.

@Rogueywon how many continues does R-Type Final 2 give you? I don't have the chops for 1cc or even 5cc if I'm honest, but I do fancy some pew-pew.

I don't even like R-Type, I just want to piss off Dirtbox. ;)

Here's the full playthrough, maybe that'll help you make your mind up.

Short, uneventful and boring. You should get the first game, it's the same but better. And it doesn't have paid DLC on top of the $70 entry fee.

Varies per difficulty. On "normal", which is the middle of 5 and the highest I've tried, it's 3. On the next one down from that it's 9 and the bottom gives 99.

I made it through on the second lowest using 7 continues, after a few runs to learn the waves. I had a run where I lost my very last life on the very final enemies before the last boss.

I'm going to stick with that difficulty for a while but work on getting the number of ccs down next. Once I've got it below 3, I'll have another go at normal.

There's one particular section in the fourth level where I always seem to absolutely burn through the lives.

I have Dimensions on 360 BC but ivenlmayed those to death, along with Neo back in the OG Xbox days when I modded one into an emulation box.

£35 for the digital copy. That’s a pound per second of enjoyment. Seems fair. :)

    Eurogamer gets a namecheck.

Spoiler: He thought it was shit.

A lot of buyers remorse around for this one at the moment, people are still clinging to the pedigree, saying you have to savor it. It's just shit though.

Seeing a good port of Mushi just get released on the switch is a turn up. Hopefully they'll release the entire catalogue if sales make it worthwhile.

Granzella have just announced further dlc stage sets for R Type Final 2, after the initial 3 sets are out.... and they also have announced R-Type Final 3!! I believe this is a tentative title for new R-Type content planned, that is beyond the scope of this game... or something.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXUPELz9OTM

I know of us all, Dirtbox will certainly be very excited by this news.

It wouldn't normally work in a Arcade game where you shoot for a high score, but in this it works quite well. The Seven dlc stages are all homages of previous games and once you have beaten them once you can then use them to build, save and play your own seven stage R-Type using a combination of any of the 18 different stages in the game (11 base game, 7 homage). The only restriction is that you have to use one of the final levels as your Stage 7.

    Edited for clarity.

It really doesn't look great. For some reason it reminds of footage from Mighty No.9, a similar blandness perhaps.

I have no doubt that the developers really tried, but they're far too divorced from the time and influences that birthed R-Type to begin with. That's the arcade scene combined with Alien, H.R. Giger's art and all the films, anime and other media that in turn used that as a springboard. It's those cosmic horror elements and the atmosphere that seems to be missing in terms of art direction plus the game design overall looks far too sloppy.

Sad, it's a lose for everybody. I wish they'd aimed lower and just done a Collection instead, packaging the R-Type series in one place with improvements if possible. R-Type Delta, if they haven't lost the source just needs a bit of work replacing textures, a wide screen mode and presentation at a modern resolution. That could have sold the package by itself and R-Type Final would have stayed final

Sounds like a load of tosh.

I'm a shmup purist and pick n mixing from 18 stages! no thank you.

Its like the developers dont have any respect for the genre or what draws the fans to these game sin the first place. How can you even compare high scores?
