Haha, it is me - I stopped with the, erm, "length", as it became clear that no fucker was bothering to read anything past my first sentence; still, there are always solutions, as my grandad used to say - often in answer to the problem of there being too many people around he didn't like, and often accompanied with a slow menacing motion across the throat - and, as you can see, I'm illustrating my own personal solution to this "problem" you humans have, by simply taking an inordinate number of words to ever actually properly end a fucking sentence: take that, humanity, you bunch of ingrate cunts.

DB: Ketsui, Espgaluda AND DDP Dai Ou Jou are all emulated FUCKING PERFECTLY NOW*; seriously, Ketsui is running like a runny shit on my two year old laptop - and believe you me, I know exactly how runny shit looks on that thing, you know? - I only didn't come in and say, "hey, Deebs, you are aware of this, right?" because, well, I kinda just assumed you would be.

Shit. Second sentence. You won't ever know how great Ketsui is now.
Sorry, I don't make the rules.

Heh, just went out and got myself a Saturn type joypad thing JUST for these new shmups. Fucking A.

DB: I had to have a bit fiddle around with espgaluda to get it to work, there's a shmups.system thread on what I had to do - some renaming of the files was all. Apparently espgaluda 2, Ibara and Mushe are all very close too...

I did get the monkeys to work, yeah. Just as well cos they were doing my fucking head in; laying around the house all day, watching fucking Jeremy fucking Kyle, eating all my crisps... bout time they were bringing some money in themselves. Mind, I never see any of it. Apparently they make excellent bankers. Who knew.

    Scanline thing?
I'm currently using shmupmame 2.2, which does give me some scanline options, but it still doesn't look quite right.

Those settings are a bit overkill really, personally I'd like to get some settings that kept the aperture bleed/blur and phosphor life but I don't have the patience to keep fucking about with them considering the settings don't save :(

Anyone know if I can set a common backdrop for mame for games that don't have them?

Oh, okay, if it has the HLSL tab I'll check it out (by the way, that link you provided didn't work for me, had to get the PDF elsewhere).
I've never noticed this HLSL tab in my MAME (based on 140 I think) - I take it if the tab doesn't appear it's more down to my graphics card just not handling it? Or is there something I need to do to make it appear first?

Do we have any shooter fans on the boards or collectors? If so what are your favourites, and what era's shooters do you most enjoy? Do you prefer vert or horizontal shmups?
I do like shmups a lot, but unfortunately I lack the patience and skill to be any good at them. So after a few hours of getting stuck in the third level (it's always the third level) I usually have to resort to credit-feeding. :-/

There are some shooters that I always end up going back to though, because of their design or BIG EXPLOSIONS. In order of release/exposure:

Shoot 'em up Construction Kit (C64) - I wasn't really into the genre way back then, but I lost countless hours trying to make a decent shooter with no artistic skills, no clue about level design, and a very limited tool set.

Wings of Death (Atari ST) - not exactly a great game, but it had good graphics, good music, and wasn't very hard. Also, huge fire-breathing dragons!

Under Defeat (DC) - love the design, love love love the explosions!

Gradius V (PS2) - too hard for me, but nonetheless incredibly gratifying to play.

rRootage (PC/PSP) - all the bullet hell boss goodness without any of the boring levels in-between. Also surprisingly good to play on the PSP (no tate mode though, in contrast to Noiz2sa for example).

Deathsmiles (360) - I'm not really good at this, but the explosions are spectacular. POWAH UPPUH!

    Aha.
    And bollocks.
The latest version of shmupmame has went back to .99 (I've no idea why).
And I've only been able to get shmupmame (140) to work thus far (on win7).

    Edit:
And I just realised I've not listed any of my faves.
Now. I could list some that have been mentioned already (Ikaruga, just about anything by Cave) or some that I'm thinking haven't yet (Raiden/Fighters, 19xx, Battle Garegga, Batrider, Vasara), but really, in all seriousness, there is only one, and it's already been mentioned. I even wrote a review.

    Ahaha. I said "review".
