OK so I dug out my Wii today for the first time in goodness knows how long?

    Why? I hear you ask.

Well I finally got hold of a copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends which I've been after for quite some time having been a massive fan of the original Dreamcast version.

For some reason my Dreamcast version is corrupt in some way (despite being a legitimate original and not a pirated copy) so although I'm able to play it I've never been able to complete it as the game stops working part way through. Always drove me mad and I never found a workaround so the game remains, to this day, uncompleted.

Anyway I bought me the Gamecube version (even if it isn't quite as good as the original due to the compressed sound etc.) and excitedly set up the Wii to play it (which took ages. Had to find batteries for the remote, plug everything in, re-sync the controller, locate the sensor that goes atop the TV etc.) only to discover you need a Gamecube memory card to save the game.

Obviously I can get one from ebay or Amazon fairly easily but that doesn't help me right now and I want to play IMMEDIATELY.

So my question is this, if I rattle through several hours of fun today and leave the console on overnight or for a few days until my memory card arrives will I simply be able to plug it in once I have it and save the game then OR does the console need to recognise the memory card is there when I start playing? I currently get the screen saying "memory card has not been inserted. A memory card is required to save your game. Press A to continue without saving" which makes me worry that if I start playing now I won't be able to save even when I do get my memory card, without starting again (which would be intensely frustrating).

So does anyone know if I'll be alright waiting for my memory card or will playing it now be a waste of time?

On the GC the Memory Cards were hot swappable, I suspect the same is true for using them in the Wii. However, some games like to create a stub save when you start a game to act as a parent to the actual game data saves, though this is rare.

So I just wont know until I get the memory card then?

I guess it's worth taking the risk although it would be INTENSELY frustrating if it did turn out I had to start from scratch again.

    Cheers for your reply

It's really down to the game, most let you shove a card in at any time and as long as there is space, you can save.

The GC version is superior in my opinion because they toned down the frequency of the random battles.

Actually yes that would be a bonus. There were times in the Dreamcast version when it got entirely ridiculous how frequently you'd get chains of "random" battles that were almost always exactly the same in any one section that would otherwise take you a few seconds to travel.

Goodness I'm so excited! I'm off to start my air pirate adventure right away. It's a shame that there's absolutely NOTHING like this available for the PS3. And yes I've got Final Fantasy XIII but it's really nowhere near as good as the classic JRPGs. As nice as the battles look I don't enjoy them anywhere near as much as I did in FFVII or Skies of Arcadia. I like to be in complete control of all my team rather than just hammering X whilst sitting back and watching them do whatever they think is best

I didn't think it did, no.

I felt the whole question needed typing out as here was no obvious way of putting it more simply. Giving the thread a title like "gamecube question" doesn't really separate it from the crowd does it
