That is quite a daft amount for a company to have in apparently liquid assets. They should invest it in R&D or developing a new market or something.

Yeah, not gonna be so awesome when the economy goes to shit and the value of the dollar drops by half.

That so many large companies are holding on to such huge piles of cash is somewhat reassuring. In so much as it shows that they are confident the economy is going to be severely devalued. Of course, they could be dead wrong.

If I was an employee of Apple I'd be wondering where the fuck my raise is.

Why not pay it as dividends or on R&D or in remuneration though? I suppose we have to expect Apple to make a very large acquisition in the future.
