Registered 19 years agoWhat about this one Barton? 12x optical zoom (with image stabiliser), 4Mpixel, £267.78. Only drawback is the dismal memory card (16Mb? Poor, my 3 year old camera came with the same size card), but then you can always buy a bigger card to go with it as well.

Registered 20 years agoYou tried using the dpreview.com camera search tool? They probably won't have too many reviews at that price range, but they have the most comprehensive details of features I've come across online.
You have a preference as to the memory format? Want A/S/M priorities? Zoom range? Need wide-angles more, or close-ups? Want a compact style, or a better lens? -

Registered 20 years agoCanon A95 if he wants a fairly compact camera with 3x zoom. Wins every test. Excellent pictures and lots of settings to tweak if one wants to. -

A95 is the big brother of the A85. Both are excellent.

Pixmania has it for €380 including batteries & charger AND a 256MB card aswell.

Registered 19 years agoIt's currently my 'favoured' candidate, unless I can afford a Panasonic FZ20 - 5 Mpixel, 12x optical zoom, Stabiliser, metal case, and a lens that has a constant f2.8 throughout the entire range of the lens. But then it is £100 more than the Z3, so... -

€449 in Argos. Not bad at all but da missus preferred the look and features on the Canon. -

The Canon was my other choice. In the end I tried both and it was the sheer speed of the minolta and the total control over the exposure that swung it for me. Coupled with the fact that the Minolta looks a lot better and flashier..
Only prob I had with mine was an iffy CCD on the first one, which Amazon swiftly replaced.
And if you want to see the image quality, go have a look here at the pjmaybe album (under NZ Holiday photos)

Registered 20 years agoGot the A95 after and it is a lovely little thing.
Dead handy to use 5M pixels, 32Mb card, you can get lens attachments for it. Nice little screen that pops out like a camcorder. Me a very happy little monkey I have a new toy to play with. \o/
Oh and €449 btw.

It's just not fair, I keep trying to get my daughter to wreck my kit so I can upgrade but she steadfastly refuses to do any damage whatsoever.

Just been thinking about getting one myself. Christmas present from the rents perhaps? Hehe.
Anyway, I've been looking at the Canon A*5 range. They do look good. But that camera of yours peej... seems dirt cheap for what it is?! 6 Mpixels and only £190? Here:

Registered 18 years agoI bought a Sony DSC-V1 and its tops. 5mpix, 5x optical zoom - you can just point and click OR you can fiddle with lots of manual settings if you want to get into a bit of pro photagraphy. The battery life last about an hour and half so i would advise buying a second battery. I bought a 512Mb card which holds endless amounts of pics. I took it on holiday (2weeks) this year and used it all the time and with the 2 batteries and 512Mb card I didnt need to worry about recharging or card space.

Registered 20 years agoDirect link. Is Empire anything to do with EmpireDirect though? I think we've had some bad reports about them (note, Tomo). Also, I think your link has now expired.
Personally, I reckon it depends on your defintion of 'amateur photographer'. For some it just means 'non-professional' - i.e. people who buy an EOS-20D instead of an EOS-1D (1 grand versus three), for others it means someone who prefers a 'prosumer' model rather than an SLR, and for others it means someone who wants a compact camer rather than something more bulky. And yet for others, it can mean the sort of point-and-click person that'd be satisfied with that 44 quid camera you linked to (which by the way, doesn't look worth 80 quid to me when you can get a Fuji A303 for 100 quid quite easily). -
